Earnhardt on the Camaro

I am at Bristol today and asked Dale Earnhardt Jr. about going to test the new Camaro in Australia last winter. Here's what he said:

“I had a good time doing that with Chevrolet and they were kind enough to let me go over there (to Australia) and see that and drive it. It’s a neat little car. It’s a good looking car. I drove the V6 and the V8. It’s like an old muscle car. It’s real heavy and kind of looms around on the road a little bit. It’s really heavy and seems to be a little wider than you would expect it to be. It drives very much like my ’67 Camaro and my ’73. It has a lot of great style. I think it has a lot of good style to it. They brought in some of the older concepts as far as the body lines and character lines and stuff. The interior is kind of neat too how they did the interior.”

Give the guy a break, if he says he was there we have to believe him unless you or someone else can prove him wrong...

Interesting. We know the Camaro is "big" but i know she will handle better than my old Caprice Classic, and i think she'll be just a step behind my Cobalt in the corner, but only because of the extra 1000 lbs. The extra 190 hp might change that up too though!

At the least it's phrased like it came from a Nascar driver. Good to have Junior's approval though.

And remember this was even before the car went to the Ring. In the very early stages of testing.

The car was rough at best. I'd like to hear his input now. Or, after the SS is released.

Glad he's paid to drive, I don't believe he could handle speaking engagements.

It coincides with what was said by Jr on Saving GM. It was early in development, but there is only so much that can be done to hide the mass. But everything that we've heard is that it will handle well, even if it still feels heavy.

Honestly though, I'd rather the Camaro feel like a muscle car than a sports car.

You have to understand his father to understand his point of view.

They don't need to talk much. These guys prove it on the track. They didn't call his dad the "intimidator" for nothin'.

Of all the current Nascar drivers besides Jimmy Stewart, I would trust him the most.
