Help me determine whether or not a tune is preferred...
Giving this topic it's own thread...
Bone stock car other than no cats. Is a tune going to do much good? So, if I replace the downpipe with a catless "test pipe," stock manifolds, stock intake with stock paper filter, stock engine.....isn't the stock tune going to be fine? Seems to me that the mass airflow sensor would detect the slight increase in air coming in and adjust accordingly. Then the upstream o2 sensors would fine tune. Am I wrong about this? Will I benefit much from a tune? I understand that the o2 sensor codes can be deleted with a tune, but assuming that I can keep the codes away, is there any added benefit beyond that? If so, what would that be? |

Im guessing if youre removing the downstream cats and just letting the sensors sit, I would think that the parameters for the ecm would be off, but im not totally sure. I would get a tune to tune them out

I don't think that mod alone would be worth the time or money with the rest being stock.

My primary concern is the engine breathing more and the air:fuel ratio being off. But I don't think it's going to be breathing much more, but I could be wrong, which is why I'm asking. |

Just curious. Why are you only removing the Cats? Might as well do some headers and get a good tune.

I ran an intake, ported tb and catless midpipes for a few years without a tune. Just had simulators on the rear o2 sensors for no CEL.
I see no point in tuning unless going FBO.

A tune won't gain you any real benefit except for clearing the CEL on a stock motor. A test pipe won't gain you anything over a converter on a stock engine.

I may go with headers at some point, but I may not. The cost to benefit ratio for GOOD headers just does not pencil out as far as how I see it. Not for how I use the car anyways. I have had nothing but problems with headers on other cars and trucks that I have had. Fitment problems, exhaust leaks, gaskets that don't last..... For now, it will be test pipes. I have very little appetite for long tube headers. Although I do understand the advantages to them. |

if youre running simulators and the o2 sensors are removed, then you should be gtg just like you are. you [I]might[I] have an issue if one of the upstream o2 sensors crapped out, but unlikely...
