2010 Camaro SS (L99) starting problems
Hello,
I have a 2010 Camaro 2SS with the L99. Its been sitting forever and has very low miles. After draining most of the bad gas (had about 1/4 tank and was able to drain about half of it to 1/8 tank) added 5 gal of fresh gas, tried to start and it cranked, but did not fire up. Removed the air intake, sprayed some starting fluid in it and it fired up briefly and dies. Same thing over and over again, but always fails to run. Pulled the fuel line on passenger side, some gas came out, not a lot. Pulled fuel line at fuel rail, nothing (or very little came out). When I turn on the key, it sounds like the fuel pump is working. After all this, when it sits for a few minutes and trying to start, it acts like it wants to fire up, but doesn't. It acts like its starved for fuel. So at this point not sure what to check next: fuel pump (but sounds like its running), fuel relay, fuel regulator, something else? Anyone have this same problem? Sure could use some advise here. Thanks! |

Check fuses, Check fuel pressure, sounds like it's no good because usually you'll get a soaking of gas when you disconnect the fuel feed line. If the pump is actually turning on the fuel pump sock filter is probably gunked up, its the only fuel filter. Likely need to pull the pump replace it with a new sock.

You might also have some seriously gummed up fuel injectors. If it has been sitting as long as it sounds, running any of the old fuel through it may have gummed up the injectors.

What pyro said can also be a problem, but don't start there, start with getting fuel pressure in the system once that is good if you still have a problem then you look further.

I too figured I would get sprayed with fuel when I removed the fuel lines from the pressure buildup. The starting fluid, just like any car, makes it fire up briefly but if no gas being pumped, it dies.
The gas that did come out of the fuel lines did stink a little bit, but wasn't too bad overall or discolored. I've seen and have ran a lot worse in other cars. Let it sit since yesterday, came home a little while ago, it fired up briefly (no starter fluid) when trying to start it and for a couple of seconds afterwards. Not sure if what I am hearing is the pump or the actuator for the flap in the throttle body...because I can clearly hear and see that resetting itself on every start. I will check the fuse next. Cheap and easy. Then if needed, I'll need to drop the tank, pull the pump and filter, clean or replace both. Not looking forward to that huge task, but I'm not going to cut a hole in the floor to access the pump as I'll likely screw that up! Thanks Green and pyro! |

Possibly, the fuel in the lines is so old it will not fire. I have seen this happen many times. Before removing the fuel tank, I would try disconnecting the lines at the tank and fuel rails, and blow the old fuel out, then try to start it.

If you pull the fuel feed line off and turn the key on, if that pump is running something will come out, if it dribbles out the pump is almost dead or there's a restriction. You can always bang on the bottom of the tank with a deadblow if the pump then kicks on you know it's the pump, old school trick that's quick and easy. You can also put a funnel in the fuel fil, have someone else turn the key while you listen and you'll be able to tell if the pump is turning on. Sounds to me like the pump isn't coming on.

On the LS3, and probably on the L99, there is a shrader fitting off the fuel rail. It is on the driver's side front. Remove the cosmetic engine cover, remove the valve cap, then remove the shrader valve. Same tool used for the shrader valve in a tire valve stem. Place a rag in that area, still should be under pressure. Place a hose and large container to catch the fuel. Turn ignition switch to the run, not start, position. Fuel pump should turn on briefly to prime the system. Should be good flow coming out. This will also flush out the rail feed to the driver's side. If very little fuel and pressure, then fuel delivery issue. If after flushing and having good pressure, then probably injector issues. Hard to believe that all the injectors would have issues due to gunk. Bad/old gas can really cause starting and running issues. Even though you drained as much as you could, you may still be blending new gas with old. Continue to purge out the old gas mix through the shrader fitting. When low, add some fresh gas, repeat. Then half tank and start it. How old is the gas?

Needing some help with my car. I changed the timing chains, injectors, and connected sensors at the same time. Put it all back together and the car didn't start. Shot it with some starting fluid and it sat and ran great for 10 mins. Drove it around the block had no issues or noises. A couple days later it doesn't even start with fluid now
