Dust-Free Pads

I'm surprised I haven't seen threads on this before. Surely somebody else is sick of having their wheels covered in brake dust the day after washing them ?

Has anybody tried any aftermarket dust-free pads ? I became a believer when I changed pads on a prior car several years ago. From dust nightmare to dust-free in 1 day.

Anybody ?

Any special tricks for the 4-piston SS brakes ?

There's been several threads on the subject but to summarize many people are complaining about excessive dust. This is due to the brake pad compound used, they are made for the Brembos and do create a lot of dust because they lean more towards performance than cleanliness. I am going to install Hawk Performance Ceramic pads and drilled/slotted rotors next month. There are many brake pad options out there but there are trade offs. Do a search and also check out Hawks's website.

Hawk HPS is better. Much better stopping power than the ceramic pads and still reduces the brake dust significantly over the brembos.

I don't have enough miles on the new Hawk Ceramic pads, but so far there is less dust. Supposedly - according to Junkman, the Wagner - Brake Pads - Thermo quiet premium pads (@Kragen - O'rielys) - produce little to NO dust! Not sure of their performance...

I installed the Hawk Performance Ceramics this weekend.

See this thread:

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63866

Was very easy to install, even with the mod I did to repair Q&C issue with the Hawk pads.

One pad's wear sensor was poorly mounted so the pad wouldn't clear the calipers when installing. I bent them back and re-alligned. Also, only (2) of the (4) front pads have wear sensors. Rears have none. Of course, rears don't wear as quickly and you should do regular pad inspections anyway. But, Q&C was questionable.

Also, the Hawk pads didn't look like the same attention to detail was applied as compared to the stock Brembo ones. The stock pads have a media layer between the pads and the metal shim. I'm guessing this is for noise and/or heat insulation. Only the front Hawk pads have this layer. I re-used the OEM metal shims with the Hawk high temp grease and everything seems to be working fine.

IMHO, I don't think the Hawk Performance Ceramics will offer equal or better braking than stock pads due to the large tapered area, but I'm not auto crossing/SCCA. I bought it for dust reduction with hopefully near OEM braking performance. We'll see in the next weeks regarding dust residue.

Where did you get the high temp grease and where do you apply it? Thanks for the great post!

The grease comes with the Hawk pads. You apply it under the metal shim and on the backs - sides facing the calipers, NOT the rotors! Mine have not made a peep since I put them on. Although, my stock pads never made a sound...I'll be trying some of the other suggestions next, although I think the Hawk ceramics feel good at this point, and they're not fully bedded in...

I spoke to a representative at Hawk this morning on exactly this subject. He stated that there are only minor differences between the HPS and the HP Ceramic pads and that to the average driver it would not be noticeable. He did also say that while both will still disperse brake dust, the HP Ceramic will be grey in color and the HPS will be black (more noticeable) in color.

I would swear by it. Because of the way I drive, I need all the stopping power I can get! These pads more than perform AND leave ZERO brake dust.
