Hitting reverse by accident?

The other day, when stopped at a light, I went for first gear and accidentally pushed past the gate and put it in reverse. Fortunately I heard the beep and slipped back into 1st before taking off.

It seems a bit too easy to get into trouble with this - at least with the V6 -M6 trans where R is to the left of 1st gear.

Has anyone else had trouble with this?

First time I drove a V-6. Somewhere is an engineer that deserves a boot in the ass for that design.

I did it once, but you actually have to press over with a lot of force to get it in reverse. I found I merely just go to second, all the way over to the left and down, and then go straight up.

There is a beep and the DIC comes up "R" if you put it in reverse.

V6 manual comes from Aisin.

V8 manual comes from Tremec.

that happened to me when I test drove a 1LT manual . . . luckily it was at a stop light and the beep saved me . . . I guess it is an old habit from previous manuals where you make sure you're in first by pushing it all the way over to the left and it's OK if you hit it a little hard because it has nowhere else to go . . . it does take a bit of extra force, but I thought it happened a little too easily

I wonder what would happen if you did it while trying to grab first in a tight corner?

I haven't done it (gone into reverse by accident) without knowing about it (the beep or the "R" on the dash) but I have gone into R without meaning to several times on the V6 manual. It is too easy to do so IMHO, it should have an extra collar on the shifter that you pull up or push down to get into R (I don't know the real name of this type of control).

I usually go into second then up to find first as has been previously described.

I have owned many cars with manual tranny's, they all have their own quirks. The LS is a smooth shifter, one advantage of the power the v6 has is it will pull in any gear, it is hard to be in the wrong gear, the rascal just pulls:-).

Instead of looking for first at a red light, look for second (left and down) then go straight up into first. If you go too far it won't go down.

I've done it a couple times but only once when I was in a "hurried" situation. Just gotta be smooth and not forceful going over to 1st and you won't get reverse. You actually have to push over pretty quickly and forcefully to get in reverse.

I did it 3 times while test driving a LT M6. Way too easy to put it into reverse. It should be next to second or next to fifth.
