Carport for the Camaro

Hey Guys,

I am movin-on-up in the world, and about to move into my first house. I currently live in downtown Detroit, and my primary motivation to move out to the "burbs" is to protect my lovely new Camaro.

Unfortunately the rental houses I have been looking at in my price range leave much to be desired. But thats a whole other discussion....

So i found a great house, but unfortunately the only thing its missing is a garage. So alternatively I am looking at buying a carport soon after I move in. Has anyone on here ever purchased one of these DIY carports? Or had one installed???

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ive seen these in my neighborhood, but when it gets really windy they toppled over and damaged their car. Maybe they got a cheap one but i dont really know

Damn. Thats exactly what Im worried about. This thing would be right up against the side of the house, but im just not sure how they are secured to the ground. But that is definitely my top concern.

Thanks for the link.

I had a 10 x 21 carport installed a month before getting my Camaro.

I recommend upgrading the thickness of the tubing. (to 10 gauge?) This also gives you a standard 1 ft higher carport.

I got the regular style and put sides on it.

I also had 90 mph wind anchors installed.

I think it took the crew 2 hours to install everything and that was in a light rain.

I have one of the Shelter Logic. Would not buy again. With all the rain, the ground was very moist and the anchors loosened. Then we had some very high winds. Well...I came home from shopping to see the entire thing in my back yard. Thankfully, I was in my car. Definitely make sure it is anchored.

i was planning on building my own. My dad takes up the garage with his two mustangs. Ok one mustang and a really cool mobile shelf. We built two for our bikes and yard equipment so i think i can pull another one together.

Yup! My 10x20 Shelter Logic car port ended up in my neighbor's yard the day we had tornado style winds! She's now anchored into the cement (after buying 3 or 4 replacement parts). So far so good!

Survived a 7.2 earthquake yesterday! ;O

if your gonna get one, get a good one, ive had a carport for few years now, its got a concrete slap, and the poles are cemented into the ground, and the slab around em. Its been through Hurricane's Rita and Ike with any damage.

My friend has one that bolts down to a 2x8 at the front and back and then he put his plow on top of the wood at the back. That thing isn't going anywhere! lol

Yea, this thing is gonna be sitting on a paved cement driveway, so I would assume those kits would have all the appropriate anchors. The last thing I want is to pay for my own car's demise. But I just dont know the difference between the good and bad brands. Online, everything looks the same.

Well what kind of price rage are you dealing with? This site does custom jobs http://www.allsteelcarports.com/carports/

I would say if it snows a lot and is windy stick with a steel structure bolted into your drive way if that is possible. Here are some hints on car ports. http://www.carportissues.com/. Hope this helps at all?
