Why MPG so bad?

Ok so I've had my Camaro for a little over 3 weeks now, and it goes without saying that I love it! But I'm filling up more then I think I should. I have a Auto V6. The car is telling me I'm getting only 14 mpg, but it feels like less. Since the first tank of 87 that the dealer put in, I've been filling up with 89. The car has a little under 900 miles on it. It's my daily driver and I do most of my driving in the city. Does 14 mpg sound about right? I'm seeing most people with the 6 averaging at least in the low 20's.

Can anyone offer some insight on the matter, or maybe some suggestions on ways to increase gas mileage?

Can't speak for the V6 but....

I have no "proof" of this but my SS fuel consumption seems to have dropped off a bit as its gotten broken in. DIC is still reading 18.9mpg average driving back and forth to work but the number of days I can go without a fill up has increased from 3-4 to 5-6.

It could just be me getting used to it and driving differently though....

I got a V6 and I check my averages today and it said I was averaging ~25mph and ~19 mpg. If you are going to do city driving your mpg will be lower, I'm doing highway driving so mine is continuing to climb.

Not much you can do with increasing your mpg if you are driving in the city. I'd suggest not speeding as they say you get your best mpg in your highest gear at your lowest mph.

Go back to 87. That's what the V6 is rated for, 89 isn't going to do you any favors. Also, give it a few hundred more miles. I have the M6, but I'm definitely getting better MPG than I was <1000 miles, or so.

I have a 2LT/RS.. I felt like mine wasn't doing very well in the city in the beginning either but after my oil change and some more break in miles, it is a lot better. I get right around 19 in the city now as long as I keep my foot out of it. Acceleration is the key factor. Keep it easy off the line. Just my .02

Depens on how you are driving....if you are driving like my wife does..floor it then slam on the brakes at every red light then that would explain the mileage. If not then something may be up. The only time my SS avg has dropped to 14.X MPG was after a several hard runs through the gears. It normally avgs 17-19mph 50/50 city rural driving, usually not babying it but not beating on it either..just driving normal.

You might consider taking it to your dealer so they can check it out. I think the V6 should do better than that (either city or highway).

I don't think my 2LT RS has ever registered above 17 or 18 mpg. I've got 2500 miles on mine.

First use 87 you gain nothing by using 89 second if you drive it vigorously in the city 14 is about right but under normal conditions and using any highway time it should go up.

I guess the city driving has to be the reason? I'm only at an average of 15 mph.

The car actually does alter its timing based on whether you're using 87 octane or something higher. It's not a huge difference like you get on the V8 automatics, but it's there.

Anyway, in pure city driving I think I've been getting 16-18 mpg. I'm sure it would be worse if not for the fact the streets of small-town Iowa are filled with slow, timid drivers who make it difficult for you to really stomp on the gas.
