Gas Smell With Maggie & CAI?

Had a maggie installed with a Roto-Fab CAI. Motor upgraded with forged internals- 650 HP at 11.5 psi boost.

I am getting fume/gas type odor coming in to the car with the heater on at idle.
Goes away if I turn off the heater/fan. Or goes away when car is moving with heater on.

So starting the car in the winter with heater on is now no good.

Is something routed wrong, or near a fuel source that is causing this? Is it because the Roto-Fab air filter? It is supposed to seal with the hood from what I understand.

Is the radiator fan supposed to not allow this to happen?

This is difficult to try and diag without actually smelling it.
I'd assume that you have full exhaust as well... could it be the HFC/catless smell? Maybe a exhaust leak of some kind?

Alot of Camaro's will give off a faint odor of oil threw the vents.
It should quit after a while....How many miles you got.

There is more info here to be found.
I don't believe it's a big deal,just annoying.

I'd call LPE right away and hope you don't have to take it there!

Are you sure it's fuel and not antifreeze? It takes a little while for that smell to burn off.

Could be a variety of things. How miles have you driven it since the install? You're sure it's fuel and not oil or coolant?

First things first - you need to check for fuel leaks, and I mean really check. Especially around the fuel fittings and rails. A fuel leak dripping on a hot engine is a huge safety concern!

Next I'd let the car warm up and check to see if any oil/grease is burning off the headers. Whatever it is, it's contained to the engine compartment and drawn through the heating system when the ducts are open.

In a last ditch effort, try this kit:

http://www.amazon.com/Tracer-Product.../dp/B000JFHNTM

It will detect the smallest of leaks by using UV dyes. I have one and I use it constantly.

Good luck.....

Vince

i would think that the problem is the heater is sucking in the fumes from the fresh air ducts in the wiper cowl try putting it on recirc an see if it goes away

I would say -welcome to winter. The fuel smell gets stupidly bad in the colder months.I'm guessing you have an aftermarket cam which adds to the fuel type of smell.

Also if you have a valve cover breather, that smells up the interior nicely.

So far I've put about 900 miles on it since upgrades. (Car itself is at 10,000 miles). (Took 600 miles to get home). Cam is the GM LS9 ZR1 supercharger camshaft.

I will check for any kind of fuel leaks, but I never smell anything when I walk in to the garage. Never seen any kind of smoke/exhaust leaks. I think I'll also call up Lingenfelter again.

I had a similar problem on my truck, on the bottom of the fuel rail there was a plastic plug that was dripping because the o-ring had gone bad. Scared me to find that because it could have caused a fire. give it fuel pressure (key on position) and look it over for any leaks. i would make sure you dont have an actual leak before driving it.

So any updates on this? Did you ever find out what caused the fumes?
