Terrible NJ Drivers what should I do?

Ok so i am driving to a doctor appointment im in the right lane doing about 45-50. All of a sudden the car to my left starts coming over into me. She did not use a blinker and did not even look in her passenger mirror cause theres no way you can miss a bright red camaro thats nearly side by side with you. So first reaction i slam the brakes and move closer to the curb to avoid her slamming into me she was inches away from hitting me when i tapped the curb. It didnt sound so bad but i quickly speed up get behind her write her plate down and then i pulled over to check it out. I get out of my car take a look my rim is shredded bad curb rash on 2/3 of the rim tire is scuffed up and now am hearing very bad brake squeak.

What should i do?
I stopped at the police station that was 1 mile up the road explained to them what happened and they try to get me to fill out a police report for an insurance claim through my own insurance thats not gonna happen. so she give me another choice of taking it to violations in which she would get summoned and we would both have to plea our cases to the judge.

I think i should track down her license plate and tell her to either pay for my rim or i take her to court.

Some input would be nice and if anybody knows how i can track down a plate that would be great

thanks

I"m from Jersey and sometimes I am afraid to take my Camaro to work on a nice day. I don't know if its just in New Jersey but drivers are definitely getting worst. The only way I would know on how to track down a license plate is if you have a friend who is a cop. I'm sorry to say but I think your chances are slim and none on getting the girl or her insurance to pay for the damage at this point.

There is, probably, the most salient comment so far.

Sometimes in life you end up taking some crap and moving on.

Remember, some day you may make an unintentional mistake and someone will be looking at doing the same to you.

Heck, daily life is fraught with pitfalls and challenges, for the costs of the repairs, you may be best to move on.

Heck we have our fair share of dipstick drivers here in the Chicago area.

I was just wondering why you didn't lay into the horn. Have had many people try and change lanes into me when I was driving my much smaller car. A little horn action and it'd wake them the hell right up. I also probably wouldn't move from my lane as well. I'd let her hit me since it's a hell of a lot more dangerous to try and swerve to avoid her potentially hitting someone/something else and getting yourself killed. If she hits up against you and you're in your lane. She's 100% at fault and there isn't a thing she can do about it. Should she run she now faces a potential felony for hit and run, especially if you get an injury out of it.

If you think New Jersey drivers are awful any other state has their share too,one place that really scares me is Florida, anyone driving a Cadlliac or Lincoln is someone who should have hung their keys up a long time ago....

I live in NY and work in NJ. There is an absolute contingent of people who are mentally absent drivers. They do not have a "feel for the road". Sorry to say but 9.5 out of 10 are women. They are on the phone, do not judge the speed of cars passing when they change lanes, they just go over when they feel like it, and they drive slow on faster roads. There was a woman on friday driving 40 on the Garden State........yes no more than 40!!

Anyway, NEVER hit the brake, the gas is the best, she would have seen your car and jerked back over. Once you hit the brake you went deeper into her blind spot and she kept coming.

I would say this one is on you. There is no way for you to prove she came over, she never touched you. Buy a new rim and bring it to the dealer to see what other damage you caused.

Good Luck!! and I really feel for you, I am on those roads EVERY DAY!!

Sorry to hear about what happen...I say just buy a new rim and get your car checked out at the dealer it will be cheaper that way instead of taking her to court...you can get a new rim for like $150 check ebay and the classifieds...btw you should have honked ive had people try to do the same and i was in an suv they jerk right back in to place as soon as they heard me honk...thats what you should have done...

I woulda have (and have in the past) hit the onstar button as soon as I hit the curb and explained to the dispatch what happened. They will connect you to the local police and explain to them. Usually they will have you follow behind at a safe distance until they can get there. Depending on the town/city and how busy they are, they may just blow it off. But at least you would have record with onstar that you tried to stop her if it does go to court (and they will have the exact location when you pressed the button).

Just go sign a summons and inconvenience her now and make her show up for court. Be ready for someone else to show up if it isn't registered to her. Then you're SOL

Same here in Little Rock, I fear for my life when I drive my car cause every kid with a loud tail pipe wants to race and everyone else drifts into my lane as I pass them. Weird.
