Ferraris
Anyone here own a Ferrari? I was just wondering what real life with one of those is like. What's the maintenance and insurance run on it? Can you actually drive it anywhere without getting it keyed and such?
I'm thinking about getting on the waiting list for a 458 Italia, but I don't want to drop down a $20K deposit on a car that I can't use in real life. Any real life stories would be appreciated. Thanks!

I was ready to pull the trigger until I saw the 17MPG
J/K it's a beautiful machine. Can't comment on how livable they are but please don't start a thread on "My Ferrari got door-dinged at Wal-Mart"

Not quite a ferrari, but my dad has a 2006 maserati gran sport with Tubi exhaust, headers and a tune. With the color scheme and options he has, most people think it's a ferrari. It's very livable and has never been keyed. People more admire the car than hate it. He parks it away from other cars and nobody has ever messed with it. I'm not sure about the insurance, but if your driving record is clean and you're old enough it shouldn't be too bad. Of course, it depends where you live and what your opinion of "livable" is, but it's a ferrari. Whatever problems you have will be overcome by the, "ahhhhh yeah" every morning when you get in and start it up.

First off, regular 5000 mile tuneups on Ferraris are around 10k dollars at the least. Paying the price of the car is just a fraction of the total cost. Not only that, but everything gets replaced fast. Clutches usually do not go much more than 20-30 thousand miles, and it cost thousands each time just for that (mind you this is outside of the regular tuneup cost). Basically, if you have to ask about maintenance, then a Ferrari is not for you. Same goes for insurance. It's a Ferrari, there are insurance companies that deal specially with exotics, and it's in the thousands per month. Getting keyed..I don't think it happens very often, but once again, where are you going to take this car? Chances are more people are willing to take photos then key your car, unless you're standing in the hood. No, I don't have a Ferrari, but I have friends who have exotics. One guy who has a Lamborghini...When you go out to a place, like a restaurant, you call them in advance and say, "I'm bringing a Ferrari and need a place to park." They'll be happy to oblige, it's sort of like being a celeb. If you pay 200k for the car, be willing to spend another 200k on maintenance and insurance. It's truly for the wealthy EDIT: Only drive on sunny, warm days. You might want to have a beater dd for the majority of the year Last edited by HeHasReturned; 06-24-2010 at 12:34 AM. |

Anything I've heard its a lot different from living with vette's, especially maintenance. Most parts on a Corvette aren't particularly exotic and are fairly readily available. All their parts are mass produced, and lots of them the same or at least similar to what you may find on Silverados or Malibus. On a Ferrari, many things cost 10x what it would be for a normal car.
