Brembo Slotted Rotor Weight - FYI

Just put my new front rotors and pads on tonight...As an FYI, I weighed the Brembos versus stock and the B's are exactly 1-pound heavier/each. Note I went with the slotted, not the drilled, as I am looking for performance and durability...Good news is that my new wheels and tires will shave about 5.5 pounds per corner. Hoping to have them next week!

How much were the rotors?

So the stock rotors on the SS are not Brembo? Just the calipers then? What pads did you go with? Can you explain more about your choice of slotted vs. drilled? How do they compare for performance and durability?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks!

Just for future info, Racing Brake now makes their 2-piece patented rotors for our cars. They're twice the cost of those you linked to but they're 6 lbs lighter than stock, and 7 lbs lighter than those Brembo rotors. They are slotted and drilled in the slots. It's probably too hard to see the holes because these pics were from my iPhone but here's a couple of before with the stock rotor, and after with the Racing Brake rotor.

Reducing 6 lbs of unsprung rolling weight on each corner like this makes an appreciable difference. The OP is adding 1 lb from the Brembo rotors, but saving 5.5 lbs from his new wheels for a net savings of 4.5 lbs of unsprung rolling weight. With the RB rotors he'd actually be saving 11.5 lbs combined with his new wheels.

I know it seems like a lot of money but no more than most are paying for a catback exhaust which is basically for sound. This is a very worthwhile upgrade and good bang for the buck. Combined with a good pad they have terrific stopping power, look great, and when the rotor needs replacing you only have to replace the outer rotor, the hat is reusable so future rotor replacements will be cheaper once you have these.

We got a group buy for the forum for the first run which you can read about here: http://forums.racingbrake.com/forumdisplay.php?f=6

I went with the slotted for road course purposes - if you read up on the Brem's, they recommend the slotted and not the drilled for extreme duty. Sux that they ended up heavier, but I am looking forward to testing them out on track. I went with the Hawk HPS pads - one down from the track use pads. Went this route, as I wasn't ready to deal with the racing pads noise and squeaks. May end up there later - we'll see.

Not sure of the stock rotors are Brembo or not, but I do know mine were a bit warped already from the track...3500 miles on the car.

Well there's a reason why the company is called Racing Brake. Their rotors are designed for high heat, repeated hard use. The 2-piece construction allows for excellent airflow to help cool the brakes. They have a patent on their design of drilled slots so you won't see that elsewhere.

Read up on Racing Brake's design on their website. If you ever get to see one of their rotors in the box they are a work of art. Extremely well designed and finished. Ask mtcwby on the forum how he likes them, he has them on the front and races all the time. In fact so does d69chris and 570hp-lpe.

When it's time to replace the rotors you just got, have a look at Racing Brake rotors.

What kind of road course racing do you do?

Man, you should be a salesman for them! : ) I run HPDE's with Hooked on Driving up at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA. Great group and an absolutely fantastic track...Will definitely give them a look when the Brembo's are gone.

The OE's are Brembo's. They are "HC" iron, which is high in carbon content. Not performance rotors at all.

There are newer, lightweight 2-piece rotors hitting the market, including the better-quality DBA stuff (and not made in Taiwan). Stay tuned!
