Is a Deposit Really Required to Order?

If so, how much and what is the minimum?

Send a message via AIM to headpunter
all depends on your dealer, could be anything from $500-$5000

Maybe a valued repeat customer, who is known at the dealership because he has purchased other vehicles there previously, would not need to put down a deposit. But other than that, a deposit of $500 minimum is generally required. Some dealerships may require more. And some buyers like to put down a $1000 deposit to solidify the relationship that is just starting with the dealer for this important purchase. But all dealerships like a sizeable deposit, since it is an indicator that the same customer does not have cars ordered through several dealers, intending to go through with the purchase with only the one who can deliver first. If no deposits were required, you could easily have disreputable people ordering from more than one dealer.

Me too...I'm actually glad I did because that's $1,000 less I'll have to worry about in March. Dealer told me the main reason he requires such a high deposit is to weed out the serious buyers...I don't blame him.

I put down 1k as well. To be quite honest most of the dealers I went to on the 13th had no clue and wanted nothing to do with me. By the 14th at approximately 9:30 am I had priority one and a placed order with my 6 digit confirmation. The moral of my story is I was just happy enough to be priority number 1 with that 6 digit number and a 2010 camaro @ MSRP. So the 1k deposit was well worth it to me.

I believe it was required by GM for all the Canadian dealers to get a deposit. I was told that GM of Canada asked for a deposit, a written bill of sale and proof of id.

So my dealer has told me now several times that a deposit was not necessary and would in no way affect how quickly i got my car. I was able to call this morning and get a confirmation number. Is there anything else i need to get in order to be sure I don't end up being disappointed?

My dealer gave me a copy of the order... which isn't a bad thing to hold on to EMT644
