Any new info on GM's new V8's?

has any one heard anything new about that new V8 GM is makeing to replace our 6.2L's? I remember reading a story about GM plunking down 890 Million on a the factory and the first cars to get the new all alliminum engine would be the New Vet's.

Nothing more than it will have direct injection, and probably have smaller displacement.

nothing new, probably won't hear too much until they get closer to production.

I haven't heard anything new. I think everyone already knows that the next LS(x) will most likely be a production variant of the 5.5 liter they are currently abusing in the C6.R's in ALMS. E85, DI,...not sure what else they could have up their sleeves.

I just hope they lose the rediculous 4 cyl AFM crap. If I buy 8, I'd better be running on 8.

Whoever decided the legendary small block Chevy should run on 4 cylinders should be given the boot.

Would you be willing to pay a Gas Guzzler tax for that?

Nope, it will be an integral part. Don't like it running on 4? Go to manual mode and drop a gear or two. Should keep it out of V4 mode.

Luckily my Camaro doesn't have it in the LS3. But my Silverado 5.3 is horrible at some speeds. Keeps switching back and fourth between 4 and 8 cyls. Going down a flat road at about 45 mph, it will go to 4, bog down, switch back to 8, bog down, back to 4... repeat 100 times. Plus the stupid AFM lifters that tick like a mother on cold start. A year ago my dealer said, new ones are coming out soon....

Mileage wise, my DIC in that truck says 17.1 with about 80% highway commuting. Just about exactly the same as my last truck that didn't have AFM. If it was something like 25 mpgs, I'd say wow what an impressive feature.

But with no noticeable mpg improvement, annoying driveability characteristics, start up noise, supposedly revised new and improved AFM lifters (some day)..... I'd call the AFM implementation - a 100% load of crap.

~45 mph seems like it would be a bad zone for AFM, just like it is for 6 speed auto transmissions. Anyway, its probably calibrated for the EPA cycle where they know the speed and how long the vehicle will hold that speed.

Moving forward, that will still happen. But with the new engine they can probably broaden the operating range of AFM so that it stays on longer and doesn't get confused, like your current truck does.
