Header Install Shop

I'm looking at buying Doug Thorley Headers for my V6. But I don't know where to get them installed? They require bolting and welding.

Do you folks know a good shop to get them installed in the San Jose/south Bay Area?

I would skip the headers as they are NOT legal in California and knowing they weld in means you cannot remove them before smog test.

Save your $$$$ for other mods.

Hmmmm... That's good news and bad news.

Bad news because I wanted headers. Good news that you let me know that before I went ahead with a fairly expensive install.

Thanks for the info. How do you know the legality?

Are they longtubes? Anything that moves the catalytic converter even 0.00001mm will be deemed illegal in California.

If they're shorties, and don't move the location of the cats, then they are legal. As for a shop that will install them, a few come to mind. I've been to the first one, but the other ones are just word of mouth.

visual check. If long tube headers move the cats, they're moving them like a foot or more. It's pretty easy to check. You can find smog check places that don't check visually to make sure all is stock, but they're few and far between.

You can be sent to the state ref for them to measure with tape measures and such if you get a ticket and the officer decides that he wants a closer inspection to check if your car is legal.

They are shorties, and won't move the cats (don't know about down to the hundred thousandths of a millimeter though, though, haha).

I'll research those shops, thanks!

Yoshi's right. DT shorties will bolt right up. They shouldn't need welding but who knows. I don't think you'll have a problem with them at all. Just make sure to gut your cats for more air flow. =)

You are wrong with your statement.. Anything that does not have a CARB # assigned to it is illegal to have on a registered vehicle on the street. He has a v6 and he will have to weld in his headers so not going to be easy to change back when he needs a smog.

This is California only the other 49 states laws are any shorty is legal as it does not move placement of the cats.

See... that's what I thought. I love California most of the time. This is one of the few times where they make it more difficult. I think I'm just going to put it in and figure things out in five years, or whatever.
