Anyone get their windshield replaced?
I have no idea which forum this goes under, so sorry in advance.
Yesterday I heard something hit my car on the way to work, and when I got there, I got out and inspected where the sound came from and couldn't find a thing. Today, I got in my car and there was a crack coming from the bottom of the windshield where it's tinted opaque black. It's too far gone to get it filled with resin. :( So, does anyone know how much it costs to get a new windshield (a real GM one, not some cheap, thin knockoff)? Thanks in advance.

I'm looking at having mine replaced soon as I have two fairly good sized chips in it. It seems to chip much easier than any other vehicle I've had. I could have them fixed but one of them is directly in my line of sight...
I may look into Safelite or one of the other after market manufacturers... Pilkington is another I'll look at... Friend of mine works for them...I'll ask about the quality vs factory glass... As for cost, it's a minimal deduction if at all depending on your policy. It will not cause your rates to go up as it is not a case of you hit something... Like an insurance once told me (my mom) you never hit anything... whatever it was got kicked up by another vehicle and it then struck your vehicle... No problem...

I believe windshields have to conform to minimum safety standards... Not sure they make thin ones.... Contact a local glass company and also contact the Dealer Service Dept...
If you are concerned with thickness I am sure both the Dealer and any glass company can give you price quotes along with glass thickness. However I doubt there will be much difference, seals require thickness to be consistent.

No .. it was not at the dealer as I don't trust any dealer with my car. It was not a real GM part either, but a windshield that is OEM Quality ..
My guess is it may cost more at the dealer .. give your dealer a call and I'm sure they can give you a quote. Crowley

Hello, the GM part in the car now is a Pilkington piece of glass. The aftermarket Pilkington part is the exact same piece of glass except it does not have the GM logo on it. I suggest using the aftermarket Pilkington glass. Other aftermarket pieces of glass are fine to use and are made to the same OE specs, but there are differences such as, Safelite they make there own glass, and in my opinion is crap (lamination flaws, dirt between the glass, poor quality ect) PPG/PGW great glass usually no problems, laminex same problems as Safelite, anyways i could go on and on. Like i said they all have to pass the same tests, but in my opinion Pilkington is the best, and that is why i typically only install Pilkington in my customers cars.
here are the pics of the OE glass in the car and the aftermarket Pilkington. i charge 399.00 installed for non remote start, and 399.00 with remote start. DW01814 GT Y is remote start, and DW01813 GT Y is without. if you have insurance and a low deductible it is worth while for you to go through your insurance. typically your rates will not be affected if you have not had a bunch of claims in the last 2-3 years. one more thing.....
Safelite has never made a windshield that is factory for any car. what i mean is there has never been a safelite windshield installed in any car or truck directley from the factory unlike Pilkington, PPG/PGW, Gaurdian, Safeguard, Carlite ect which are all OEM manufacturers. Yes safelite is made to oem specs (so they say lol) but thats where it stops.. |

I had mine replaced, using OEM. 50.00 deductible, no rate increase, installed by Safelite. I requested it be OEM, Insurance said no problem. It has the GM logo, but it was still installed by Safelite.
