Question HELP - Speedometer quit working @ 64,000 miles

I just turned over 64,000 miles the other day. I have had the problem about 3 times in the last month. After sitting in the parking lot while I am at work on sunny days, my analog speedometer does not work. It will normally work the next morning or later that evening once I have let the car cool off and restart it. However, it did not work yesterday after work and it still was not working this morning.

I have no warrenty, but wonder if this would be covered under defect?

I am also a little upset becasue I had some paint just peel right off the front bumper the other day while washing it and have had paint peel off twice around the back of my spoiler.

Probably a gearbox issue. There is a tiny screw/round gearbox assembly on the backside of the needle, on the actual circuit board in the cluster. The earlier cars had issues with them. If you're inclined, you could disassemble your cluster and attempt to repair it. Often, the screw just comes out of its track, since it's just press fit by the actual gearbox cover (shitty design). Otherwise, a replacement cluster is relatively inexpensive. They're around $200, but you will have to pay to have it done at your dealer because the cluster is a controlled inventory item, they have to return your old cluster.

Good luck

I've heard of this before. Try the dealer first.

Some of the earlier 2010's had a problem like this. Check with your dealer. There might be TSB on it.

My wife's cluster went out on her avalanche after no warranty and the dealership just charged me labor for install, no charge for new cluster. I felt good about the price.

I agree with that, HzMajesty.

I find it odd though, that everything else is just fine.
