OnStar: Good or Bad?
I'm hearing:
Pro: Unlock your car if needed help locate if stolen check on you if you have an accident... Con: Can stop your engine running passive data collection always there, regardless can listen in on your conversations while you're in car... Ideas? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Jen |

You can get daily car diagnostics emailed to you. I get them every week. Just noticed on my last that two of my tires are 1 PSI too low... it's really sweet, love ONSTAR

there is passive data collection with or without OnStar in the black box. I never considered someone listening to my conversation but really... all they're going to hear is my radio turned up too loud.
 I personally like having my own personal secretary at my finger tips. She gives me directions, answers questions, and makes reservations. Works for me

I am not paranoid, and I actually do drive the speed limits. Even if I wanted to speed, I couldn't: the car is loud red with white stripes... The police love to watch me, as does everyone else...
But in discussing the matter with a friend, he said, "If I want to walk around in my back yard nude, I should be able to in private, without having unknown persons watching me...." Meaning, that if one wanted to talk privately, either to a passenger or on the phone..., then one should be able to. I used to work for the N.S.A., and I KNOW people in positions do not always follow rules... OnStar actually sued the FBI for listening in on people's conversations... I think the question, "why would you want privacy? Are you discussing anything wrong" is really the wrong question to ask. And the assumption that no one would listen, is naive. And how would you like appliances in your home to be wired so that unknown persons were collecting data on your habits and listening in? Do you have to be considered a criminal to want to be left alone? |

No! I think Onstar is a good thing. At first I was skeptical but, after setting up my account and checking out the diag page. As well as some of the other things it can do for you. I started to warm up. The part I really like is my car has it's own phone number. I can make a call anytime I'm cruising in the Beast. I was the same with the XM too. I love the 80s stuff and Cinemagic is too cool. If you're into movie themes. Definitely renewing both subscriptions.

OnStar is not going to spy on you. Nobody wants to hear your conversation. What makes you think that anyone wants to hear them? Unless you are discussing you place in the family business, nobody cares. OnStar is not a recording studio. They are a customer service call center that runs basic diagnostics on your car and helps you find that restaurant that you can't on your own. All they do is help people, and you're worried that they are going to turn you into the feds. If every drug dealer raps about an OnStar-equipped Escalade, do you think OnStar is busting each of them in cop-coordinated sting operations and just letting them go? GM doesn't care how you pay for your car or what you do with it as long as you're happy and reasonable about your warranty demands. OnStar is not going to stop your car. They have to get legal permission to invade your privacy. You're not going to find yourself stranded at the quarter mile starting line because OnStar doesn't want you to race. If GM did not want you to beat Mustangs, they would never have built the Camaro. That's kind of the whole reason the car exists. If this does not reduce your paranoia, then you might need clinical help.
