MAF Cleaner

I have about 40k miles on my camaro and I like to make sure everything is maintained properly. Should I clean the MAF sensor? Is there a scheduled time when I should?

I know that if its dirty it can lead to reduced power and I don't want to possilbly leave any HP on the table.

CRC makes a Mass Airflow Sensor Cleaner.. you can get this at your local autoparts store.

Thanks Mach. How far away did you hold the can from the MAF? I know it is delicate and i don't want to mess anything up.

I spray the hell outta mine every oil change. I use a K&N air filter and the oil from the filter gets the sensor rather gunky looking. It might be a mind thing but everytime I do an oil change and clean the sensor and air filter i feel as if my car has a new personality!

+1

I do mine at every oil change as well. I just did it on both my Camaro and my company vehicle 2011 Expedition on Monday. The Expedition had a slight rough idle and after cleaning it the idle smoothed right out. Never hurts to clean them and it only take 5 minutes to do it on all vehicles.

Just spray the crap out of it.. Then let it dry. It super fast drying. Takes about 15 seconds to dry from being totally wet with cleaner.

I clean my MAF sensor frequently, but never use the high velocity red straw. You can damage the sensor with too much direct pressure.

On today's vehicle the MAF is the main load bearing device. It helps calculate automatic transmission pressures and many other items. Cleaning it every oil change is an excellent idea. Let it cool off for about 10 - 15 minutes, than spray it down good , let it dry and try it out. If yours is easy to remove, it is best to take it out, clean it than put it back in. This way the cleaner and the dirt are not in your intake tube going right into the motor when you start back up. We do a MAF cleaning with every transmission rebuild at my shop. customers think it is all because of the transmission repair that has brought back life into their vehicles. It also protects our work we did by maintaining proper transmission pressures.
