Coil Pack Questions
I am considering a coil pack upgrade/replacement. I have headers and a custom tune. I have NOS put have no plans to use it anytime soon. I see a lot of options with varying degrees of ohm resistance. Any of this make a difference? I don’t go to the track, which packs should I be looking at? Or should I just get replacement OEM packs?
What have you done? And would you do it again?

The stock coil pack will work fine. I have 68K miles on my 2010 SS with a supercharger. See below for mods.

From my understanding coil packs dont need to be replaced or upgraded unless they arnt working properly even with power adders OEM coils are fine

An N/A motor doesn't need upgraded coil packs. More spark energy doesn't help
much N/A. As the plug tip wears, and the gap widens, maybe, but when boosted it helps to prevent spark blow out under boost. There's just no real need for more spark energy with an N/A motor, unless you're making your own fuel that requires it. |

Good to know, I did the light test on all of the packs by unplugging the pigtail. The engine made a slight change in noise. I checked the 1&3 cylinders with a multimeter and they read .3 -.4 ohms. I guess that is acceptable but on the low end. I am doing plugs and wires and part of me just wants to change the packs. I grew up changing the distributor as part of any tune up and it feels like changing the packs is part of the tune up.

The only time you need to replace a coil is when it doesn't work anymore. Simple as that.

I painted mine, they need touched up though. I wasn't about to spend $450 for the red MSD coils just for a red theme. I want to find black bolts as I tried painting mine but as soon as you put a socket on them the paint flakes off.

I believe hot rods 4.8L Big Bang theory made 1200+ on stock coils. the later Big Bangs May have had stock coils as well I can’t remember.

I didn’t like the look of the coils so I mounted them under my radiator. Stock are all you will ever need.

You have any pictures of your mounting job?
