Stupid maintenance question

I know this might sound like a dumb questions, but I just need to ask for my own sanity.

My oil life tracker has been been under 10% and dropping for the last week, so I started looking at how I was going to get it changed. Do I pay $250+ at the dealer or $120 and do it myself.

But...my '22 car only has 5200 miles on it and I got my first oil change at around 3200 miles at the dealer (the window sticker says next change at 8200). So just so I'm not going insane...they probably just didn't reset the oil meter, right? Or is it possible that the car would actually need the oil changed again after only 2000 miles?

Engine oil reset goes to zero at one year regardless of mileage driven.

So the recommended interval is 5000 miles or 1 year?

Yes.
I put on slightly less than 5000 mi/yr and my display always gives me the oil change alert in February. I don't panic, and continue to drive the car until I get decent weather to do the oil change. The "1 year" mark is picked for convenience. if our solar year was 385 days, they would still use "1 year."

I guess I'm lucky. My dealer charges $150 and I gladly pay them.

It's a job worth doing yourself if you have the space and tools. Minimal tools are needed, but you do need to be able to get under the car. Safely.

The annual oil change recommendation isn't just convenience. Engine oil breaks down over time. It's exposed to moisture and other products of combustion in your engine and it becomes acidic over time. There should be enough additives in your oil to help counteract that, but additives have a useful life and can't stave off degradation forever. While "every year" regardless of mileage is convenient, there's a functional purpose behind it too! And on such an awesome machine like the Camaro, changing the oil at least annually is cheap insurance and good maintenance.

I haven't taken any of my GM vehicles in for their free services because I do it myself, but if I recall correctly, they'll change it when you have 20% or less on your OLM regardless of mileage. You don't need to wait all the way to 8200 miles or whatever the sticker says.

This car is very accessible for oil changes. Super easy, everything is uncovered and easy to get at. I'd also recommend doing your own, just a pair of good ramps and a small socket set and you're ready to go. After my 2 free ones I'm switching to doing my own like I normally do for my cars (My dealer here in Canada doesn't give a crap where my OLM is at, my second one it'll probably be at 60% left).

Although the 0w-40 DeXos oil is looking to be a bitch to find...
