ZL1 aluminum subframe broke due to too much torque

Hey folks,

Just ran into an issue with a fully stock vert 2017 ZL1(performance-wise). Subframe snapped in two spots from Driver and Passenger side. Engine mounts(stock) are good and car never hit any extreme path holes(never bent any rims and no bent suspension parts). Brought it to the dealer and after inspection issue was covered under the GM warranty.

Can anyone tell me how common is that? Im literally speechless to see that happening with fairly fresh car. GM rep said torque is probably way to high for this subframe(same part used for SS and ZL1). And yeah, I drive it hard and daily. Currently it has 17k miles.

Oh Crap! I have the same year ZL1 but with 18k miles. Did you notice anything different about the ride?
Now I am kinda worried...

Likely a factory defect. No big deal.

Well, Im a car guy, so met thorn engine mounts before. That’s exactly what I felt while flooring the gas. I stopped aggressively driving the vehicle and carefully headed home. Next day I came to the closest dealer with that concern because car is still under the warranty and thats what we uncovered..

Understood, if it was common though, it would have been recalled, or a TSB, or we would have certainly heard a lot more about it on the forums.

Wow! Glad it was covered under warranty as that would be an expensive job to replace the subframe.

For sure man. Thats why they were investigating if no collision or hard kicks to the suspension caused that break down. I was stressing out lol

Agree 100%. There are countless cars on this board putting down nearly twice the torque of a stock ZL1 without subframe issues. I’m sure it was just a fluke manufacturing defect.
