Sticking emergency brake- electronic or rust?
Guys- my 2013 Camaro SS with a manual Transmission- When I park the car at night in my driveway (slight incline) - I set the emergency brake- after the car sits a day the emergency brake will not release. I have to put the car into reverse and release the clutch to "push" the car until I hear a pop sound. The emergency brakes are released at this time. I assume they are just rusting to the rotor but the more I read, it sounds like an electronic issue? At this point I am using a wheel chock and leaving the car in gear to be sure the car does not roll back when parked overnight. I am not using the emergency brake unless I have to stop on an incline at a light or a drive through. The hill assist only seems to come on sporadically. Any suggestions?

The ER brakes are just like drum brakes. They are brake shoes, that use the
inside of the rotor as the drum. They are prone to rust and locking up. So, you take the rear rotor off and clean it up, and lubricate the springs and guides. https://youtu.be/bB0WgCdRAM8 That shows it, and how to adjust it too. My former HHR rear brakes used to stick all the time, they were drum... I had to spray it all down with brake clean, and lube'r up... I don't know why they don't use the cork-screw calipers for the ER brakes, they went with the old drum in rotor style. If you are pulling a handle to set the brake, that is manual, no electronics involved. |

Preload the parking brake before releasing the foot break.

I know about the drum setup inside the rotors- I have two Honda Pilots that have the same thing- I also thought that maybe the spring inside needed to be replaced. Just wanted to be sure it was not an electronic issue!

think that. You pull a handle, with cables, all mechanical. I know they have cars with the pull-up button for ER brakes, but these are not that. Those have the ER brake that cork-screws the piston in the caliper to apply the disc brake. That's why those type, you need a tool to turn the pistons as you compress them to change the pads. They're totally separate. Foot brake is caliper, hand-brake (ER) is drum, one does not effect the other in the slightest. When the shoes stick, pressing the foot brake does absolutely nothing. Happens all the time with DRUM type brakes, which is why I hate them. |

trying to figure out why these pads lock up to the inside of the rotor- if that is what is happening- first time I have experienced this- I own a Ford, Honda, Toyota and now a Chevy and this is the first time I have experienced this! My two Honda Pilots have the same set up and I have never had any issues with the emergency brakes- my Toyota's and my Ford have rear drum brakes with no issues....
