Trans brake, good idea?
We were at Ted's picking up my car today and my brother, who has much more drag racing experience than I, suggested that I get a trans brake. He said that it would help the 60' even more. My only concern is would using a trans brake be harder on the other components i.e. axles, driveshafts, etc? Is using one like doing a neutral drop at 4k and I already have a converter so wouldn't this be way overkill so a lightly modded car? Thanks guys!

Trans brake is definitly more strain on your axles and trans but it will litterly fly you out of the hole. Cars with the right trans brakes and converters are very, very fast. Truthfully you might think about some trailing arms and axles if you are going to leave on the brake. In fact at your power level you might be ready for a trans rebuild when leaving on the brake. A lot of "shock" happens to the drivetrain system much like a manual car when leaving on the brake as far as I know. Kind of like a clutch drop. The brake for sure has its advantages but I think you will need more supporting parts so nothing breaks.

Thanks Vader. Ted's son kept telling me that I should swap out my trailing arms so I will def look into that as well. That doesn't seem like that big of a deal to do. I kinda figured that a T brake would be hard on the car. Thanks for clarifying that for me. Like always,I'll see how it goes as is and then I'll have a gd idea on what my next step will be. Thank you as always for your insight and advice.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE transbrakes. They are the fkin WIN! especially on large turbo cars. if you want to know what sex on wheels sounds like, listen to a large turbo'ed v-8 on the trans-brake/2 step. It's SEX!
but as much as I love t-brakes... I'd at least get some trailing arms and differential bushings on the car first. then maybe a t-brake.

Do they make a 6l80e trans brake yet? Trans brake is no way like a neutral drop. It engages 1st and reverse at the same time, then when you let it go it just lets go of reverse.

My understanding is no one has developed one yet. We have one on our 8 second car, pulls nice wheelies since we leave at 5400 rpm. Would not suggest it with the Camaro though unless you like depositing parts on the track.

I'd like to keep all the parts on the car for as long as possible. I need to leave harder than the 2500 I leave at now. The car pushes itself down the track if I stall it any higher.

Another thing to think about if you plan on drag racing it is that a lot of the street classes dont allow a trans brake. I'd listen to Vader's advise I think he's dead on what would be needed plus the bushings Danhr mentioned.

Right now he runs a full slick. Almost all of the classes that don't allow transbrakes, only allow DOT tires.

We are going to try some trailing arms and bushings and leave at some different speeds and see if we can't get this thing to leave a little harder. Then I guess go from there.
If I were to enter any classes that required a DOT tire I would just get a set and mount them on the Bogarts. I def wouldn't want to be left out of all the fun! |

With thousands of 1/4 mile runs on LS/4L60/4L80 based cars I can agree absolutely. And it is not just the stall speed, but the entire setup of the converter build to match it. I can't tell you how many good Yanks/Vigs, etc. I have replaced with a custom one and picked up another 1-2 tenths. I don't speak from just visiting tracks for T&T and some local points racing, this has been learned from years and years of doing it professionally and LOTS of trial and error. Your car is still awesome as heck with Teds magic either way.

If the tires hook you will probly 60' better mashing it off idle.
Trans brakes can be brutal. With the right converter you can 60' like a bastard in a root's car. |

My truck 60's like a MF'er off idle. Just mash and hold on. When I stall that up, even to 3600, it doesn't leave as hard. I've had so many poeple tell me to leave at max rpm that I totally forget to even try off idle or some lower rpms. When the car had the stock converter, 18" drag radials, and 550 rwhp it would 60' 1.60 consistently. Since then Im on a 17" slick, the stall and almost another 100 rwhp so it has to do somewhat better. Its just a matter of trying all the options. We are doing the arms then I'll mash the bitch the next time out and see what happens. Traction has never been a problem yet. Those tires seem to work well for me.
