Break It Down Slowly For A Tuning Noob

Exactly what should I request when I go in for a tune? I know I've seen (thanks to the invaluable Camaro5) to have the torque management reduced by half and if I plan to get exhaust, to tune out AFM. What else, specifically, do tuners do with a standard tune, and what do you suggest I ask for?

Be gentle, it's the first time I've ever had a custom tune!

Your tuner should know 100% what you need.

Sure. I guess what I'm saying is: I assume there are certain things you either need to request and/or they'll ask you how much you want tweaked. For instance, I've seen people here say completely cut the torque management while I've seen others say to protect your car you need some of it so cut it in half.

Steve is correct. Just tell the tuner how you use your car mainly and he should be able to tell you what he is going to weak.

Also make sure you let your tuner now of the mods to the car as well.

make sure you get him to turm off skipshift and the rear O2 sensors.
if you dont like the exhaust popping get him to turn off the DFCO... or whatever it is called. (I like the popping)
some people turn off the rev limiter and the speed limiter.
getting the AFR to ~12.5 at WOT is something any tuner would already do.

it sounds like you have the general idea of what you want.

The best thing to look for is just a quality tuner. Not only will a quality tuner know what to do and what not to do with your car.... but he/she will know what to ask you.

Maybe divulging where you are located might help us figure out where a local tuner is.... as there are quite a few that are sponsors

Like other's have stated, if the tuner is any good, he'll know what you need. Just tell him everything you have done to the car, and generally what you're going to use the car for. It's not until you get heavy into the modifications that the tune becomes more intricate and personalized. I would also ask some of the big name tuners on here directly for information. I know Ted from Jannetty Racing is the best around up here in the North East. He's the only one who has, and will ever touch my car as far as modifications go!

Well, you mentioned AFM in your post so that means an A6. A good tuner will/should have trans tunes of varying states for this car as well as engine tunes. A proper trans tune will seriously wake things up! Ask me how I know.... I had my AFM tuned out completely and still got better cruising mileage after the tune.

A word of caution. I would not suggest turning TM completely off. It makes things very harsh and can cause stuff to break rather quickly.

Hypurone: Was only planning to have the torque management cut in half.

Oh, and as for what I use it for, it's my daily driver. I doubt it will ever see a racetrack.
