Driving lessons

Friday night, I taught one of best friend's two kiddos to drive stick.....in my Camaro!

We spent a good bit of time in a Lowe's parking lot, and then I let the older kiddo (who is 20) drive home from there. She did great!

Now if I could just get my own two girls to be interesting in learn to drive a standard.

Ummm.... I certainly hope that is a licensed minor your teaching how to drive a stick, otherwise that might be a felony.

I'm 20 and had to learn to drive stick when I got my camaro. I learned on mine too. It was totally worth it! I'm just glad I didn't destroy the clutch haha

At least in Arizona, no the traffic laws still apply. There is a story behind all this. Two years ago when I working in my lawn some guy had his daughter driving her Ion. It was pretty obvious that he was teaching her how to drive because when tried to do a u-turn at the corner she mounted the curb and came close to hitting me. When I voiced my displeasure the gentlemen exitted the vehicle and challenged to me....well...a duel. However when Screech From Saved by the Bell (he really looked like that) realized I had a foot and at least 60 pounds on him needless to say he took his daughter's advice and got back in the car. Anywho, if things had stayed at that nothing would've happened. However, when someone keeps coming back and shouting threats out the window and telling me not to call the cops, the response becomes obvious. Apparently this guy had a couple priors so PD had no issue at all hauling Screech downtown for an overnight stay. Never saw the guy again and his Ion disappeared from his house two days later. Anyways, yes I do think kids should be taught how to drive a stick I had to learn my own.

I'm certainly not going to commit a felony and post about it!

The one kiddo is 20, as I said, and the other is a licensed 16 yr old.

Not only was it a parking lot, it was after closing time at Lowe's, so there were very few cars in the lot. I was interested in teaching them to drive the stick, not in buying another vehicle!

My daughter semi-learned but was really nervous, so I bought her a vehicle that's automatic. She'll be home from college on spring break next week, and I'm going to try to get her to learn again and be more comfortable with it.

Not all of our learning is done in the confines of the law.

I learned to drive at age 8. Way out on dirt roads, camping with dad.

Learned to drive at stick at age 12 in a high school parking lot on a Sunday afternoon. This was before cops always patrolled school campuses.

Did it better prepare me for driving on my own? Absolutely. And, from the moment I got my learner's permit, he's always put me in the driver's seat. Bad traffic? Snow? A carful of precious cargo? His prized vehicles? Yes.

As such, I've never been "scared" behind the wheel, and I've never gotten myself into dire straits, either.

My dad would let me drive the camp truck when visiting our hunting camp. My friend and I would jump in the old 1962 Chevy pickup with "3 on the tree", and drive on all the two track roads throughout the woods. We had a blast rowing through the gears....

I beat the hell out of that old truck, but it sure helped me learn how to drive a vehicle at a very young age.

The only driving I did when young was a tractor. They figured put the city kid behind the wheel, what can she mess up? I turned too sharp and dumped the hay off the trailer.

I learned to drive a stick when my daddy sold my car, bought one for me with a stick instead, and I had to drive it to school in two days. I had no choice!
