RS/SS badge blackout tips

I've read as many topics on vinyl blackouts as I could find and haven't yet been able to successfully do the RS badging on my camaro. The problem I'm having is that (unlike the bowties) the RS is painted on the inside and the red paint doesn't just sit on the "bottom" but also comes up the edges of the chrome. Everytime I've tried slicing vinyl in there I get a red ring around it. Any tips?

There should be a gap between the badge and the chrome ring around it.

Theres no gap, I can see that the red paint isn't just flat on the bottom. I don't want to use paint because I'm trying to make any mods I do only semi-permanent.

I'm going to tape off all the surrounding paint on mine and paint them flat plack. You can always buy new emblems if you want to go back.

That's weird. The red on mine does not go up the sides.

Can you tell in this pic? The red "curves" upward as it meets the chrome.

Well I tried doing what you are trying, I ended up just taking off my SS and painting it all black.

I think I read somewhere that the red in the middle is actually vinyl.

What I did was painted mine entirely black and purchased some precut ss inserts on ebay and stuck them in there. Turned out rather nice. You can do this for whatever color combo you are looking for.
