Cool down ticking...

Anyone else notice their car "ticks" ALOT while cooling down? I'm used to the sound when a car is off - oil dripping back into the pan, etc.., But mine does it even while running? I notice the sound after my commute home- specifically in the garage as I pull in with the car still on. Is this normal or do I have fluid dripping internally even when it shouldn't? Is it the exhaust/metal contracting? The car has 700 miles on it so I'm just getting used to it and all of it's quirks.

For the record, I did a search and didn't come up with anything...

TIA,
Matt

Yes, all new cars will do that quite a bit. My guess would be that it's the cats and exhaust system cooling down after running. I'm guessing idle causes gas temperatures to be cooler versus under load.

If you want weird noises sit in your car after about 10 minutes after you take out the keys the radio will finally die and the suspension will raise slightly in the rear end.

Pinging and screeching(less common) are the sounds made when heat shields cool off. If you have been running your car hard, and then come to a red light, you could hear it ping. Some cars will make noise up to an hour after shut down depending on the length of the heat soak.

Seriously no BS. The only reason I know is because I used to sit on surveillances at my store prior to them opening in the parking lot. These would usually be hour long sit downs so I've heard it plenty of times. Not the easiest thing hiding a IMO Camaro where you can see people but they can't see you.

Measure it with a tape when you get out of the car and again at the end of the day. My only thought is it may be the shock valving holding it down and as the rebound bleeds off the rear rises to the original height. Just a thought.

think it is expansion and contraction of metal being heated and then cooling.
