Year old K&N intake just now throwing lean codes?

I've had a K&N intake in my 2LT/RS for almost a year now. A few weeks ago the CEL came on and took it to the dealer. They said the MAF went bad and they replaced it.... no big deal. A week or 2 later the CEL came on again. Took it in, they said it was throwing lean codes. The dealer cleared the code and said drive it and see if it comes back. 2 days later it came back. Cars been in the shop for 5 days now. Just got a call from the dealer saying they took a stock intake off a car they had on the lot, installed it, and it went away. They're advising me to either put the stock back on or contact K&N and ask them about it.

My question is how could the intake just now be the problem after almost a year of driving (almost 27,000 as of when I dropped it off. Atleast 25,000 of which are with the intake)? Has anyone else run into this with the K&N or am I getting a run around?

I had that happen to me on my car and took it off. Malfunction code it was. I am going to get another brand this time around when I do.

When the filter dries out, it allows more air into the intake thus leaning the engine out. Have you cleaned and re-applied the filter oil lately?

After 25 thousand miles the system isn't the problem. Check their install, something isn't right.
How do they say it?
Your dealer is an idiot....

Cleaned an re-oiled after the first lean code problem.

I emailed k&n. Hopefully will hear back from them soon. I was also having some body work (damn curbs) done so she'll still be there a while longer. Took her in thrusday morning, they're just getting it to the body shop today. The car ran perfectly.....until the first cel and the maf replacement. I'm honestly starting to think they f'ed something up and are blaming the only aftermarket part on the car they can.

Check the breather installation then... see if they pulled it off the manifold end and you should do a battery reset when you change a MAF. Un plug the battery for 10 minutes or so then drive it a bit so it can re-learn the new MAF.

That would make total sense. Tech in a hurry didn't unplug the battery. I'll try that as soon as I get her!

also, are you sure you didn't over oil the filter when you cleaned and reoiled it? over oiling will cause oil to get on the MAF and cause a code, too

ECM re-set or fuse pull and try a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. Sometimes dirty injectors lean an engine out.

I cleaned and re-oiled the filter after the first lean code issue. 2 days later the code came back. I'm 100% positive that I've just got to do the ECM reset. Thinking about it, when I had the MAF replaced, I had my bass guitar cab in the trunk and my gear - it was untouched. So they didn't unplug the battery for sure.

Not necessarily true M8... there's a chassis ground on the passenger side of the engine compartment right below the ECU box that can be easily disconnected.
