What do you think? Maxtor
Hi dos anybody know if a Maxtor drive work on the USB port as a flash drive if i make a file and put MP3 in the file and make a 12 V adapter for power,
In the cars at SEMA, The cars had a 12 V plug in the center console, All i need to do is make something to not let the drive move in the car. |

How large of a HDD are you planning on connecting? Most external HDD's that require an additional power plug have capacities of 500GB or more. Most of what I've seen on the market below that only require a USB plug.
The way I understand how the stereo works is that it indexes the songs that are on your usb drive so it can be more efficient at playback. I can imagine it will take quite a while for the stereo to index upwards of 100GB of songs, and I don't think anyone knows if it has to index the songs every time you start up the car and plug in your usb drive or not. And if you're going to connect, say, a 1TB external HDD to the PDIM, then it could be indexing the songs for a lot longer than you'd like. But I'm just taking a shot in the dark here. |

I have a 80g Ipod filled with 62g of music.
Curious to see how the USB & head unit handles it. Ipod also now has a 160g. that is a lot of music at your finger tips. |

i would look for one of the smaller HD's that doesnt require and external power supply. They generally cost a bit more but will have MORE then enough memory. Just looking at a couple of deal sites I can find a 500gig for basically 100 bucks. If you dont need that much (and no reason you should) im sure you can find a 250 for 50-60 bucks no problem. No reason to get a drive that requires an external power... and if thats all you want to do dont even think of an MP3 player.

I bought a 320gb USB drive for this purpose. I should never need to purchase any other drives to hold music. I have less than 10gb of music at the moment. That's around 1600 songs. I couldn't imagine having a hundred gigs or more...

^ That's impressive.
I'm sitting on 62GB of music at the moment, but not every song on my computer is a song I would typically listen to. You know how most CD's you buy these days only has 3 or 4 songs that you actually like out of the 10-15 that are on the album. I don't see why someone would need over 500GB of space just for music. I can't imagine I'll ever have that many mp3's let alone all of them be songs I actually listen to. |

Oh, I'm only talking about music.
I've got my external 1TB HDD, and two internals of 300GB and 25GB, so I know what you mean. I don't know why I even still have the 25GB HDD really... But yeah, I'm only talking about space for music. |
