How low can you go on gas?

I was running late today and didn't have time to fill up before heading into the city. Gas tends to be more expensive the closer I get so I decided to risk it and see if I could make it all the way back to my regular gas station without refilling.

I ran 39 miles after the Low Fuel came up on the DIC and made it. I felt like Kramer in that Seinfeld episode where he was test driving a new car and kept going until they ran out of gas just to see how far they could go.

Wound up putting 17 and 3/4 gallons in once I filled up. Anyone know the capacity of the tank including reserve? I think I was pretty close. And yes, I know it's not good to run it that low but curiosity, and stinginess got the best of me.

In driving for fuel economy I've gone maybe ten miles under the 40 mi. warning light, but never run it til it stops. As the saying goes, your mileage may vary. I assume there's a bit of a safety factor built into that low-fuel warning, too.

It's a 19 Gallon tank. So you still had another gallon and half left to go ( +/- 22 miles).

Usually don't go below 1/2 tank but ran it once down to a range of 11 miles and didn't have to coast or walk into the station.

1/4 tank is as low as I'll go... except once driving to a part 2 of a Camaros & coffee cruise. Stretched it 22 miles before finally finding a Sunoco station.

I never understood why people fill up with a 1/2 or even 1/4 tank remaining. It might be cheaper at that point in time but it's actually cheaper over time if you fill up almost empty (2-3 gallons to be safe). I understand people worrying about going dry but you have nothing to worry about if you know your car well and plan your trip.

plus if you fill only to about a half tank you burn less fuel over time because of less weight...not much but enough to make a difference.
