How low can you go on gas?
I was running late today and didn't have time to fill up before heading into the city. Gas tends to be more expensive the closer I get so I decided to risk it and see if I could make it all the way back to my regular gas station without refilling.
I ran 39 miles after the Low Fuel came up on the DIC and made it. I felt like Kramer in that Seinfeld episode where he was test driving a new car and kept going until they ran out of gas just to see how far they could go. Wound up putting 17 and 3/4 gallons in once I filled up. Anyone know the capacity of the tank including reserve? I think I was pretty close. And yes, I know it's not good to run it that low but curiosity, and stinginess got the best of me. |

In driving for fuel economy I've gone maybe ten miles under the 40 mi. warning light, but never run it til it stops. As the saying goes, your mileage may vary. I assume there's a bit of a safety factor built into that low-fuel warning, too.

It's a 19 Gallon tank. So you still had another gallon and half left to go ( +/- 22 miles).

Usually don't go below 1/2 tank but ran it once down to a range of 11 miles and didn't have to coast or walk into the station.

1/4 tank is as low as I'll go... except once driving to a part 2 of a Camaros & coffee cruise. Stretched it 22 miles before finally finding a Sunoco station.

I never understood why people fill up with a 1/2 or even 1/4 tank remaining. It might be cheaper at that point in time but it's actually cheaper over time if you fill up almost empty (2-3 gallons to be safe). I understand people worrying about going dry but you have nothing to worry about if you know your car well and plan your trip.
