Hyundai found a solution for the xirallic paint pigment shortage....has GM?

Just found this from Reuters. In short, Hyundai replaced xirallic with mica, a component much more readily available and not single-sourced from ONE plant in Japan. The story has all the details...

Hey GM.....are you doing anything similar to deal with the xirallic paint pigment issue? I would really like to give you my hard earned money for a 2012 CGM!

Ok, 130 people have looked at this and nothing. Hopefully now that it's Monday, someone can shed some light on whether or not GM has a solution for the xirallic paint component issue.

If not, are there only going to be 7 colors for 2012?

Note to self.....don't post on a weekend.

don't bet on getting the color you want. they're probably going to can it because they're looking for substitutes that don't require that pigment. They may go the way of Hyundai, or they may just offer a non-metalic gray or something.

They canned ABM supposedly to make room for synergy green, but they never brought it back after synergy green production ended. Who knows, they may not bring back any blue to replace IBM for 2012 either.

Mica is not the solution. It will change the appearance of the color - especially the 'flash' and 'shift' of the color in the metallic.....so just adding Mica means that the color needs to be revalidated.

More to come!

That should work OK for knock-off car company like Hyundai

Thank you fbodfather, that is at least something.

I understand you have to keep thing under wraps for the most part so I'm going to think positive and assume that your post means that there IS a solution and I will be able to get a 2012 CGM.

I found this as the OP for another thread regarding the same issue:

The plant was also damaged by the earthquakes.

I have read that this was the only plant in the world that produced that particular additive. The impact was industry-wide.

The good news is that the stuff is being produced again.

Merck, the company that owns it is planning a new factory located in Germany to prevent such shortages in the future.

I figured this thread could be a clearinghouse for info on the issue & a central location to be able to check on which & when our metallic colors are being given the green light again.

Here are a couple of links to recent news. (June 2011)
