SS Exhaust Question - Volume and Growl
New to these forums, and have a question.
I currently own a 2011 Mustang GT with a Roush catback installed. My fiance is actually interested in a 11/12 SS convertible. We went car shopping this afternoon and she was a little put off with how quiet the stock exhaust on an SS is compared to mine (she loves the muscle car rumble) and asked if I knew of a Camaro exhaust system that might sound comparable. Since I don't have an answer, do not trust the audio quality of the files online (my Roush system sounds very different than what I could find online when I was researching for my car), and don't know any Camaro folks to listen to theirs... I thought I would reach out and see if anyone here might be familiar with the sound of a Roush system on a 2011+ Mustang and know of a system for a Camaro that has similar volume. If no one does, I could try and describe the characteristics she would be looking for if that would help. P.S. From a Mustang guy, this was my first time getting in a Camaro... and was very impressed with it overall.

Nothing is going to be dead on like your exhaust because it is a totally different engine, but the Stainless Works Retro Chambered cat back is pretty similar to your Roush cat back if I am not mistaken. It is my personal favorite for these cars. We are trying to coordinate to do a high def video with one of our customers but here are a few to give you an idea. Feel free to hit me up if you guys have any questions.
And here it is with headers. |

Magnaflow I have zero experience with, so will definitely look into that one as well. Thanks for the two suggestions! Does anyone know if the GMPP exhausts are anywhere near being loud? Or is it just an OEM add-on that adds a little tone but isn't loud under load? Basically, tame but with a rumble under daily driving conditions but loud and mean when going near wide open throttle is what she would be looking for. |

The Retro Chambered cat back is a no drone system. The Borla S-Type for the Camaro isn't quiet as aggressive as it is on the 5.0 but it is a nice system. It does have some mild drone though.

I'll tell you what... I LOVE the sound of that system, and no drone is a huge plus. I'll have to share your links with her tonight and get her opinion, but I have a feeling that may be exactly what she is looking for. Thanks again for that info! |

To be honest I have never found camaros to sound like mustangs with any exhaust. I will however share with you that my magnaflow 2.5 competition system and long tubes sounds nearly identical to that "hollow" but deep rumble stangs have with aftermarket systems.

The Roush cat back is just straight pipe, I assume there must be some drone right? I ask because a muffler/resonator delete with xpipe might sound similar for a lot less money, but drone will be noticable. If that's not an option, then go SW Retro for a deep old muscle car sound without drone.

Yeah, I have never heard a Camaro sound like a Mustang, and not really trying to imitate the sound... but really don't want anything louder than mine for the Camaro we are getting her, however, we do want a nice V8 rumble with a decent volume on cold starts and under WOT, loud but not obnoxious is good. (Mine actually skirts the line of obnoxious at WOT above 5k RPM). A solid rumble and decent volume would be ideal, maybe I can get some time to meet up with this guy that has that Magnaflow setup installed. The SW system above sounds amazing in the vids, and she loved it when I pulled the link up for her last night. |

Drone definitely is not an option, and don't mind spending much on the set up for her since it will probably be the only mod done on her car. I am still blown away by the SW Retro vids above... that may very well be where I go unless I hear the Magnaflow 2.5 Comp system in person and really like it. Sounds like Borla and Corsa may not be the route she is looking for to have a deep V8 sound that is present and then loud when opening it up. Thinking it may not be a bad idea to try and find a Camaro meet around here, and go around and see if some folks will let me hear various set ups. Tough judging by online opinions and youtube videos that can't do systems justice

I'll second Chase's recommendation of the Stainless Works Retro Chambered. I just installed mine about two weeks ago, and love it. My car has a nice deep musclecar "growl" to it now. I would not trade this exhaust for any other.

Where in MD? I can let you hear my exhaust. But I have long tubes.
I had a pypes pype-bomb axle back before my new engine / full exhaust. it sounded great. |

The magnaflow is not droney without lts. With long tubes it can be annoying if you don't like it. It does not bother me at all. My 5 year old girl always says "turn the car down it hurts my ears!!" lol!

I'm a MD resident as well (Ellicott City) in a similar situation. Itching to pull the trigger and mod starting with LTs and exhaust, but would prefer to hear some local rides in person first.
Had been considering the SW headers and retro system for it's 70's sound, though it seems many folks are thrilled with the ARH LT/Flowmaster AT catback system as well. |
