Tick TICK TICK TICK TICK!!!!!
Ok! Ive read that alot of V6 Camaros have some direct injection related ticking noises but I have a V8, L99 and unlike most of what I have read
here, mine doesnt go away after 5 seconds. i can drive it 10 miles, get out and it sounds like someone thumping a beer can under my hood, in perfect synch with the idle. If I idle it up, it gets faster. Is this ok? I called the dreaded dealership, talked to one of their tech guys and he assured me that its normal on those cars and it would probably go away by the time I get to 5k on the mileage. Really? REALLY? He said he owned one too and his did that as well. Whats the word from the real experts here on this board. You guys seem to know alot more from sharing experiences than those guys in the garage at GM. Thanks in advance for any input. |

Just my opinion but I don't think the engineers want you to have a car that ever ticks. I mean they want the smooth and great sound and a tick disrupts it. And what if he doesn't own one? He is trying to wriggle his way out of work.

I agree. It kinda brings down the pride level a bit when I Get out of the car and the volkswagon parked next to me sounds like its in better running condition!

Couple questions...
Was the A/C on? What octane fuel are you running? Are the manifold and exhaust still stock?

Sounds like you have a stuck or bad lifter...go to the dealer, ask for keys to a new L99 car on the lot and start it. If no noise...tell them to fix it.
And for the record: My L99 does NOT tick.

I've had tons of LS motor cars, some tick some don't. Some get fixed, some don't. Some get better with miles, some don't... I had an 09 Silverado 5.3 AFM motor, it had a couple lifters that ticked noticeably when new, and kind of a rough idle. At 25,000 miles it was perfectly quiet and smooth. Funny thing was dealer kept saying wait wait wait, bulletin coming for new lifters. When the bulletin finally came out, engine perfectly quiet.
![]() I'd wager it falls on - randomly mediocre quality of the lifters, lifter bores in block... Harley has had the exact same issue for years. Some bikes tick, some don't. Sometimes a dealer tries to fix them, with random success. Probably by no coincidence, HD's use a small block chevy style roller hyd lifter. I watched a show once that was on George Bryce (owns Pro Stock HD teams and his own HD performance company) on how he builds high performance HD engines. One of his key points was on how precise the lifter to lifter bore clearance had to be, and the OE stuff was all over the place with that clearance. Building his motors with that spec perfected gave him an edge on the competition that often just threw in a new cam and lifter set into an OE block, and often winding up with a ticking motor and clearances out of whack. On the V8, now you've got 16 chances for less than perfect lifter to lifter bore clearance or a quality issue with the lifter itself. A hyd roller lifter on a very mild cam should be quiet. Any one that isn't is out of whack. Maybe some wear themselves in to a better fit? Maybe some wear themselves to a worse fit? But I think its as simple as random mediocre quality of the lifters and/or the bore fit. To fix it right, you'd need the expertise and equip to check all the lifters and lifter to bore clearance. But in reality, the average straight time nuckledragger at best will just throw a new set of lifters in there (may or may not fix it) or just tell you it's normal. |

My L99 doesn't make any ticking noise under the hood. Go back to the dealership and get that fixed. If they give you the cold shoulder again get with a GM customer service rep on this site.

I can't relate with the exact engine or even car for that matter, but...
My wife's SUV ticks upon start up and even for a while longer if we don't use the approved factory oil filter. It has some sort of .....shoot..... I can't remember the exact thing that makes it different than the others. But, we did it a couple times...other filter....factory filter...other filter...factory filter.... Sure enough, the ticking was due to the filter. Just tossing it out there as a possibility. |

I agree. The check valve in the filter when the car is turned off prevents the oil from draining back in the pan it hold pressure. If there is an aftermarket filter on the car without the check valve then the oil drains back then you dry start therefore ticking. A while back Chrysler had a TSB (Technical Service Bulliten) on this and a lot of folks got screwed out of warranty for engine replacement bc the aftermarket filter didn't have the check valve in it so Chrysler wouldn't replace the engines. |
