V6 Camaro vs Crossfire limited
The guys in my club have just about convinced my hubby to race me, his Crossfire vs my V6 Camaro. Neither of us have ever been on a drag strip. I need some good coaching so I can beat him or at least not totally embarrass myself. What say you guys? And what do you think about my chances?

If he has the base 215 hp model your got him beat. If he has an srt-6 330 hp model you're screwed.

If you research they have a 0-60 mid 6's, and low 15's 1/4 mile. You should be good to go.

I can confirm you being able the take him. My wife has the same car and it does run well, but the camaro is quicker. Is the Crossfire an automatic or a manual. If it's an automatic he'll be spin free off the line and can get off the line quick. Practice your launches and you are sure to win.

What do I need to do to launch successfully (besides practice)? Any guidance for the rookie would be appreciated. And both are auto. His is totally stock. Mine has only the mods listed in my sig.

The Crossfire weighs around 3K pounds too, you won't destroy it but you'll win. I actually had a chance to play with a couple of these. One guy was practicing using the paddle shifter and he could drive, car was surprisingly quick. The other was over in about 3 seconds.

Guessing you have the automatic, and 18" 1LT rims? I'm not sure about the 18" wheels, but on the 20" RS rims, they like to be spun a bit before the run so that they are heated up and get better traction.
The best V6 launches (quickest 60') I've seen for the automatic have been described this way: - Left foot on brake. - Use right foot and hold RPMs around 1,000 to 1,100 RPM - When the last yellow light in the tree lights up release the brake and push her to the floor. We have seen guys hit a 2.0 60 foot doing this, but then again its not common. Hopefully the 18s won't spin too bad off the line doing this because if you get a bad launch that could spell trouble! Good luck! Keep us posted!!

Thanks. Now that is some solid description that I can relate to. Please anyone else chime in. I really want to beat him and I think I can. He just thinks it is no contest & his car will just best mine. He thinks he is such a "good driver" but he is rather chicken too (even his brother said so when we told him about the race this weekend). He really does not drive his car very hard or fast at all very often. A couple of times we followed each other down a country road. He'd take off & I'd stay with him. When we got home he fussed at me saying stuff like "Your car can't take curves like mine can you should not have been driving like that!" I just said, "Well I guess it did take those curves didn't it?" Anyway, I think If I learn how to do this with a little guidance from my C5 family, I can win! So I'll take any thoughts anyone can offer to a newby that might help. And yes I have the 18's with the all season tires.

Ruby, I know with my IROC I got my best 60' times by doing the above... but also by 'rolling' into the throttle. I don't know what the torque curve on the V6 looks like, so you may be able to stab the throttle immediately. For me, I got too much wheel-spin because I got peak torque at about 2800 RPM lol.
Anyway, practice a few times (legally) getting onto the freeway, etc by yourself when there is no traffic. I'm not advocating street racing, so I hope it doesn't come off that way--I just mean that you can learn the dynamics of your car and start to get an idea where you'll get wheel-spin off of a hard launch. The track prep will also help some, so keep that in mind.

DropZ is right about practicing. Launching at a track is different than launching on the street. Practice before the race, of course, but show up the track early and get some practice there before the big race.

Ruby,
Here is what I have posted for others, GOOD LUCK 1/4 tank of fuel is plenty, make sure you use 93 octane for the week leading up to the event os that you have that fuel in the tank, helps keep from pulling timing on the high RPM's Automatic, is a good thing easier to drive. Go with sport mode. Turn the traction control off and do a dry burnout getting the tires on the hot side. DO NOT GO THRU THE WATERBOX. A NO-NO for street tires. At the line turn the traction control back on. Put your left foot on the brake and bring the RPM's up to 1000. At the last yellow release the brake and hammer the gas. Hold on end enjoy the run. Set the rear tire PSI to 30. (Better traction, I plan to go lower next time out) Set the front tire PSI to 40. (Less rolling resistance, I have gone higher) Good luck, be sure to post up in the drag racing section your time slip and results.

I was about to ask the same thing. I didnt know they made srt version for that car. I used to like it when it first came out but quickly started looking funny after a while, but 330hp in a small package like that probably is not too bad.
