Unhappy Nail in my tire..

Question here... I have been told by two tire companies they can not plug or patch the tire as the nail is too close to the sidewall. My question is how bad is it really to just keep driving with the nail in the tire? I only seem to have to add 1-2 psi a week so it isn't losing much air at all. And if I do need to replace the tire, should I get both rears replaced or just the one. Only has about 6k miles on it and no burnouts or track runs good tread left on both. (stock RS 20" Pirelli Pzero 275/40ZR20)
Thanks in advance.

Driving on a tire with a nail is like driving on a spacesaver spare - keep your speed down (under 60) and don't plan on going too far. With the nail near the sidewall, you don't want to risk a sidewall failure.

Check the member classifieds here and see if anyone is selling a slightly used rear tire. If so, you could save a lot of $$$.

I would only replace the one tire with such low miles.

Not so fast. Had a couple tires through the years with the big tire stores like Merchants, Tire and Battery, and Costco claiming that a nail/screw was too close to the sidewall and wouldn't patch. Liability issues and strict instructions to tire technicians. Searched around and found a used tire shop with some good ole boys. Pulled the screw, grounded down the patch area, glue, patch and heat. Tires held up just fine without any air lose. If its definitely in the sidewall, then you have problems. Plus, would have to be clearly in the tread area on the Camaro for me to even want to patch with consideration to no spare for the SS.

I was a tire guy at a local shop throughout high school and during summers at college. Did they actually take the tire off and look at it? That looks pretty squarely in the tread. Unless the nail took an angle to the sidewall, this should be repairable. And usually, if the sidewall is damaged, you will see a bubble. Get a second opinion.

Go to someone else. That should be an easy patch.

Yeah, go to a mom and pop tire shop. That is easily fixable, the big name tire shops just don't want any liability.

Taken it to two already... I may just pick up a little plug kit from local auto parts place. Pretty easy to do. Thanks for the feedback.

I agree with others, that should be repairable. I wouldn't use a plug kit though. It needs to be patched from the inside out. Have you tried Discount Tire?

Tried discount and ntb. Do the smaller shops do patches or just plugs? I don't think I have ever had a patch, only ever had nails plugged..
