DIY Painting heritage grille?

Hello,

I picked up a new heritage grille and want to paint it IOM. I have the correct base paint and clear, but I want to double check on the proper steps to prep and paint before I dive into my project.

I have seen two different DIY for painting a grille

Option #1
mask
sand
de-grease
base coat
clear coat
install part

Option #2
mask
sand
adhesion promoter
prime (plastic primer)
base
clear
install part

If anyone has done this project or is confident in the steps can you please post! Also, if I need the plastic primer do they sell it at national chain auto part stores??

thank you!

would like to know this as well. getting an unpainted heritage grill and would like to paint it myself. have an idea how I want to go about it but wanted to see some others opinions before I tackle it myself. thinking about working an over night epozy dip in to the equation to help.

Well......it's a combo of both.

If it was me, I'd do the following.

Mask
Sand
Wipe with cleaner
Adhesion promoter
Light coat primer
Light Sand
Wipe with cleaner
Base
Clear

....and if needed, Sand and Clear again.

The part Gm provides is already primered(OE version) It does not come raw plastic in other words.

Step 1

1. Wash with soap(I like Dawn) and water, grease and wax remover will actualy release the promoters already exsisting..
2. use grey colored 3m scuff pads and pred to a nice even dull finish.
3. apply sealer
4. apply base
5. apply clear

Our cars are quite impressive just about anyone young or old. I would recomend having a professional shop do the refinish process.

hope the above helps

oh and your paint code is located at the spare tire location look for the U**** Number on the bottom of the RPO code decal.

I was more than happy with the results I got doing it myself. I just followed the directions and took my time. Just make sure you take the time with the prep and let it dry all the way before you handle it....
