Christmas Stars - A Tribute To Our Fallen Heroes

I wrote this a few years ago one night while on duty as an Air Terminal Operations Center Duty Officer at Dover Air Force Base. It is a tribute to all of our fallen heroes...lest they be forgotten! Please feel free to share, but be sure to keep the author posted.

CHRISTMAS STARS

The clock just passed midnight, it is now Christmas.

On this day, when most people look to the stars in the heavens above, I find myself looking down upon stars. Six sets of 50 stars upon a blue background. Stars that adorn the American flags which drape over the remains of 6 fellow brothers-in-arms. As I render my slow salute, I find myself pondering this holiday we call Christmas. I think about all the symbols this holiday possesses and what they really mean.

Our Christmas trees remain green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind. Green are the uniforms these men wore providing everlasting hope to our country that there will one day be peace.

The gift placed under the tree symbolizes the fact that God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son. Thanks be to the mothers and fathers of these men who gave their sons to protect us.

Stars that top our trees are the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the star was the sign of the fulfillment of His promise. These 6 men and the thousands who died before them are our saviors…giving their lives so that we may find peace.

A candle in the window provides a light that one can follow to get home and to keep the darkness at bay. These 6 men found their way home. Their lives were extinguished all too soon leaving a darkness in the hearts of their loved ones.

A wreath upon our door…a continuous circle symbolizing the real nature of love that never ceases. A wreath will be placed upon the graves of these brave men who ceaselessly loved their country and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Candy canes are a reminder of the staff which helped bring back strayed sheep to the flock symbolizing we are our brother’s keeper. Much as the United States is the keeper of all our allies and the military men and women are the shepherds of the straying flock.

Angels sang Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and good will toward men. For peace on earth, these men fought. Angels now carry them home.

On this of all days, I pay tribute to the stars of our military men and women who have given the ultimate gift and to those who stand ready to do the same for peace on earth and good will toward men.
