Jegs Basically Sucks

As many of you are aware - and have ordered from Jegs, it never ceases to amaze me how they can still get away with orders like this....

I just placed an order for some ARP header bolts that are being drop shipped directly from ARP. Jeg's still charged me $9.99 "handling" fee, even though they had no costs associated with this order. I called Jegs customer service and the rep I talked to confirmed and agreed. She did say "I'm just the messenger".

Having lived in Columbus for 19 years and actually lived within miles of Jegs' Delaware distribution store, they always blew....even back in the 80's. It is not the amount, but the principle.

Should have ordered direclty from ARP? Don't understand the problem, they provide the product and you expect them to not make money?

Look into the history of the company, Jegs was only started to be a clone of summit to fund their racing habbits, good products or service was not #1.

you just paid for a gal of racing fuel.

Not a cheap shot intended here but I think you fail to understand the costs associated with even this type of business. JEGS is still spending money on promotion of that item along with thousands of others, in addition to the staff necessary to process that order which includes entering it and placing the PO on the manufacturer. There is also the customer service person you spoke to on the phone, and let's not forget the building they are in with its HVAC costs, the costs of parts they do warehouse, the cost of money for that inventory, and the list goes on. While a business model where all you are doing is handling the money (i.e., drop shipments) is one of the best in my book there is still a lot of costs associated with it. It is quite possible they are paying the manufacturer a large portion of the shipping and handling fee they charged you.

I hope this helps you see more of the picture.

It's not a hidden fee, they clearly state that there is a $9.99 handling fee on ALL orders........Not sure what the complaint is here, not like they tacked on a fee after the fact.
I always wait until I need many items from Jegs or Summit, still one time handling fee no matter how much you buy.

You are correct. We have had products in the big catalogs and it is all part of the Co-op $ and the deals made with the manufactur is negotiated differently depending on volumne, etc.

It's actually smart business. It would cost $X for ARP to ship to Jeg's so they have them in stock, then it would cost $X for them to ship it to you. You're likely getting them a bit faster, too, IMO. You pay for handling once, whether that means using Jeg's logistical methods,ARP's, or both.

In this case, Jeg's is more of a 'partner' than the actual seller. But depending on the situation, I'm betting if you ordered directly from ARP, they'd either 1) not sell directly to the public (I don't know for sure, but some places only sell to jobbers) or 2) charge you more than Jeg's cost plus the $9.99 shipping.

And standard "free shipping" from ANYONE has shipping/handling price built in somewhere. They may not tell you that, but there's no way they're not getting charged on shipping costs somewhere/somehow.

Your dealer could charge you $35,000 for a lugnut, and getting the rest of your Camaro thrown in for free! To your door costs is what you have to look at, not the way they "package" the deal.

It still pays to shop around.

Even with efficient computer systems, the cost of processing an order for most companies is greater than $10.

I'm sorry if I failed to clarify my point. My point was the fact that there was a handling fee incurred when it was confirmed to me via the customer service rep that Jegs, in fact, did not incur any charge. I'm not questioning a company to make money or charge fees. My complaint is telling what the fee is actually for. If it is a "processing fee", so be it and then just state that.

In any event, this issue has been resolved. I contacted Jegs and their customer service department contacted me by EOD, indicating that I received inaccurate information, as Jegs does in fact, incur a drop ship charge - in this case from ARP. This was also confirmed from my packaging slip. For the trouble, they credited back the handling fee, as I have been a long time customer and they value my business. The customer service rep I originally talked with was in error telling me there was no fee incurred to Jegs - and for that, they were stand-up and took care of me.

All good in the end.

The handling fee is the least of their issues. I'm more concerned with the fact that everything they sell is almost always more expensive than anywhere else.
