Key fob issues

So after two years of ownership it finally happens. The fob went for a ride along in the washer. Realizing it only when I heard it in the dryer. After taking it out it was dry and to my amazement I hit the lock button twice and heard my horn. Went to leave an hour later and put the key in dash comes one and no crank. Try it again it tries to turn over for a spit second and the lock out comes up on the dic. The spare key managed to start the car so I went through the relearn process with the keys a few times and nothing ever came up on the dic but after the fourth or fifth time the dead key started working.

Is this a common thing for the key to "lose" it's programming if something happens to it?

You shouldn't have washed it. Why did you do that?

You can only wash keys on the delicate cycle. Maybe it just had some moisture that had to get worked out.

I think they are spacing out the notices so they don't have a thousand owners banging on the dealer's doors.
Makes sense....

The wash should not hurt it at all. It's just a small printed circuit board in there. After a board is populated with components and soldered down, they go through a washing machine anyhow (unless they're using on-clean solder). Probably done less these days with advances in flux solders, but the fact still remains that water generally won't harm it any.

Water can damage the circuit. Water on a component lowers the resistance and can cause it to drawn excessive current. Once it drys and still works, then it should be O.K.

It might have been an allergic reaction to the washing powder.

It's not the water but the chemicals in the water. They wash circuit boards with filtered water... Plus when they are washed there is no battery supplying power that can bun out a shorted component. Or screw the programming.
