COPO Question

Why is the car not street legal? Is it the roll cage? Is it the sub 11.5 1/4 times? I understand that a roll cage will kill on you under impact on the streets unless you're wearing a helmet. But what was the purpose of making a strictly drag only car when it's run on pump gas is it not? It makes absolutely no sense to me. I mean if it was prostock, it'd be much larger motors.

The car is produced without a VIN so therefore it cannot be tagged. It was designed as a RACE CAR ONLY.

I understand the car has no VIN. You didnt answer my question as to WHY it wasnt VIN tagged when these are reg street motors running on pump gas. What makes this car different from a reg street car besides no VIN, roll cage and slicks?

Read the list of COPO-only mods, some of which you've listed, and then stop the 1st Highway patrolman you see and ask him, if you showed in your town with this car, would/could he ticket you for "vehicle non-compliance"?

Ford doesn't sell their Cobra Jets "for street use", and neither does Dodge with their "race-only" Drag Pack cars. ALL are "purpose-built" racers...no intent to comply with NHTSA, EPA, 5/100 Powertrain Warranty...or sanity...

"Other than..." is enough reason alone, let alone all the mods you did NOT mention...

It's for people that can afford to buy another car and dedicate it for only drag racing. Cause some people don't like to drag race their daily driven cars...

Well if I was an engineer for Chevy and introducing this as a race only, my thoughts would be a minimum 600 C.I. motor to be put in place. No stock street engines. This would actually make it a race car and not a race only street car IMO. But I agree, its for the rich to have as an investment. I see probably 2 at most being raced and the rest stored in a garage in hopes they can make a dollar more than they bought it for in the future.

This vehicle is being produced, and approved, for NHRA Stock-Class racing...which, for obvious reasons, needs to have some resemblance and relativity to what otherwise is on your local Chev Dealers' showroom floor. And at that Store, you WON'T find anything New with a Big Block...but you WILL find all manner of vehicles with the LS-series V8s. And THREE hot-rodded flavors of those ARE available in the COPO.

Check the calendar...and check this thread on this website for the FULL story...

I think you'll find a 600+" Big Block will have its work cut out for it to outmuscle the 327 with the 4.0L blower...

These cars are built strictly for racing purposes. They are not emissions compliant, and they lack much of the federally mandated safety and related componenets. THi renders them illegal for street use.

Dodge has their version of the Challenger on the market, as does Ford with the CobraJet Mustang. It's called competition for a very lmited market segment.

You will actually see a lot of the COPOs racing. While there is a mix of collectors in the list of customers, MANY of the customers are hardcore racers. People will be seeing a lot of stock eliminator and super stock racing with COPOs starting this summer!

It is a turn-key race car directly from Chevrolet Performance and will be highly competitive.

The COPO's are being produced in such tiny volume that they wouldn't have any effect noticeable on the average fuel economy of some 2.5 million GM vehicles.

I'm sure it doesn't meet emmision and safety standards as the primary reason.
