Cancelled my order for a 2013 Shelby GT500 and bought a ZL1 and...
I couldn't be happier! I've never owned a Ford in my life but I decided back in March that I wanted one and put down a deposit. After waiting months and hearing more and more great feedback on the ZL1 and also some of the issues folks were having with the GT500, I found a Victory Red ZL1 with the six speed manual and silver wheels up in Michigan. I flew up last Wednesday and drove it home.
I sold my 2009 CTS-V to get the ZL1 and I was a little apprehensive that I was giving up such an awesome car for something lesser. My concerns were unfounded because the ZL1 is simply an outstanding vehicle. Although the CTS-V was equipped with every bell and whistle, It was too quiet, had an automatic transmission, and was black (tough to keep clean). Simply put... It was too nice. The ZL1 on the other hand is a more engaging performance vehicle. The sound coupled with the familiar power of the LSA engine, and six speed transmission is an intoxicating combination. I couldn't be happier... It looks like my modified C5 Corvette is gonna be collecting some dust. Here's a photo of my ZL1 shortly after arriving home from the dealer after a 400 mile road trip... A photo of the 2009 CTS-V I sold to buy the ZL1... Last edited by Paulg680; 07-20-2012 at 10:01 PM. |

Warranty wise, the ZL is cheaper to take care of than the V

Paint issues, transmission grinding, gauge reflections on the windshield, cooling issues and poor brake performance during hard (track) driving were the main ones. What did it for me was the results of the comparison with the ZL1 which unanimously picked the ZL1 as the better car overall.

Either car is an awesome choice, but for a car you can really have fun driving you made the right desicion. Now, if you wanted to do laps at a NASCAR track full speed I might have opted for the Ford, but for a good road course (or city street) the ZL1 is hands down the best choice.

Congratulations on your choice. I will concede that the 2013 GT 500 is the faster car in the quarter mile, however the ZL1 is the better car as an all around package. Best of luck with your new baby.

You apparently missed my videos. Congrats on your new ride.
Yep, the Gt500 is only good on an Oval. Anybody else out there get to lap Daytona like this? 40 Minutes of lapping at Daytona and they all wanted to ride in the Shelby or the Boss. For the record, I was in the GT500 and I had 3 passengers and showed them a glimpse of the wall. I don't care if you are Ford or Chevy. Getting to the run the Tri-Oval at Daytona is INCREDIBLE and I was blessed to do it. The management at Daytona came to us and said we have some VIP's that we need to give track rides to. I grabbed a customers car. He basically said, "Give it Hell" I took it easy. Last edited by Van@RevanRacing; 07-15-2012 at 10:39 PM. |

As a GM guy, I'm happy to see you chose the ZL1 over the GT500. You can't go wrong with either car though.
