Ever seen a gigantic exhaust pipe emit black smoke?
So on the way home tonight after work, I stopped by the car wash to get all the yuck from the past few days off of my beautiful car. I didn't dry it off because I knew I was going to detail it thoroughly on Sunday. So I'm driving home after washing it, about a 15 minute ride, which gives me plenty of time to dry off the car almost completely with the wind. There's a big lifted F-150 in front of me for most of the ride home. Typical country boy with camo deer hunting stickers and an NRA sticker [which I am an active member of as well]. I didn't pay much attention to it until I got right behind him at a stoplight to turn onto a side street near my apartment complex. As we took off from the light, I noticed his exhaust pipe was awkwardly big. I seriously don't think I've ever seen one that big before. At least not mounted in the normal spot... So as we're turning left at the light, we get about halfway to 30mph and then a HUUUUUUGE billow of black smoke comes puffing out of his exhaust! I mean it was gigantic! And although I don't know if it's possible, it was almost like it was on purpose. I gripped the wheel in fear as I drove through the cloud of redneck death and could just feel the black crap sticking to the freshly clean water beads on my hood. Ugggghhhh... I checked it out when I got home, and it doesn't look like the black crap stuck to my car or anything, so my anal retentive worries can rest after that. But the entire point is - Is there actually an aftermarket part that does something idiotic like that? Or does that dude just have typical engine contaminates that cause that smoke [it is a Ford, after all
]. I tried searching for it on Google, but only found listings for why exhausts can cause smoke and all that... Thanks!

F150's are not diesel. There is your first mistake.

Only diesel engines smoke like that unless it was one messed up gas motor. Hicks around here put those silly pipes out the bed of their diesel HD trucks all the time and they smoke profusely.

This was definitely an F-150, so not diesel. Have you ever heard of anything that purposely makes smoke like that in a non-diesel? I mean, you just had to see it. I've never seen smoke like that in one gigantic perfectly emitted cloud of death. And the exhaust tip was stupid big. That entire event was the lamest combination of garbage that I've ever seen.

Never seen something like that out of a non-diesel. They must have used a trick that we don't know about.

Man, I'm really curious... I don't know why I even give a crap, but I just have to know if it was a new redneck technology or just the crappiest late model F-150 ever.

First time i saw someone do this yesterday. It came from the top and on the sides. There was so much smoke and it was pure black, myself and everyone around had to come to complete stop. This guy was a fuc*ing tool. I would have no doubt thrown something at his car if I had the chance.

I have always wanted to get one of those dash cams, and this would have came in handy considering I was right behind him, and has to stop on a 55mph. Perfect sunny day, and turned to black for about 20-30 seconds. This is a deadly accident just waiting to happen....

I would also like to add that this truck looked pretty new, and I would say anywhere from a year 2009-2012. So the comment above where they thought it might be an old p.o.s. truck. I doubt that is the case.

There are people purposely making their new trucks do this. Most of them are diesels though. Had this happen to me last weds on I75. He kept getting in front of me and making a huge black cloud bellow out onto my car.
He was driving crazy and I did my best to avoid him. Finally he found a mustang to do it to and moved on from me. I started to call him in on the highway patrol. This dude was actually running cars out of the lane to position himself in front cars to blow the smoke clouds on them. His truck was also lifted higher than the legal limit in Florida to be street legal. His window tinting was also illegal as well. These types of trucks are common on the west coast of Florida.

Have you ever seen a diesel truck?
![]() He either swapped a diesel in or it was actually a Super Duty, but I doubt you'd mistake those two since Super Duty's are huge. |
