Question about cleaning the intake manifold
Ok, so I'm going to follow this guide.
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=288997 It seems super straight forward but I have some questions if anyone here knows the answers that would be great. Will using a seafoam deep creep soaked micofiber towel damage anything if the valve is open when I push it down and wrap it around the rods. How much excess chemical would it take to damage something? I'll be closing the valves using the camshaft rotation technique. What happens if I put a bit of the deep creep in there and it isn't closed all the way and it leaks down past the valve? Everything else is really straight forward but I don't want to ruin my engine because I didn't something retarded like got a cleaning agent in the cylinder. Also, what are the rods made of? Aluminum? I'm asking because I plan to use a pistol cleaning rod on them and don't want to mar them up. Thanks guys. |

I followed that post when I did mine. He gives a lot of really helpful advice and overall wrote a good step by step. I also cleaned mine, Here's the link to the one I posted if you're interested:
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=328400 To directly answer your questions: Be careful with microfiber and other things down there. I would personally stay away from anything that might leave fuzzies anywhere or stray fibers. Maybe some lint free rags? If you end up with a bit of deep creep down in the cylinders, the absolute worst that could happen would be a bit of a cylinder wash. But that really shouldn't be an issue since the deep creep is petroleum based. Just shine your light in there when you spray in the deep creep little by little and check for a good seal. No matter what you do, some is going to seep down. Regarding the gun cleaning rod - in my thread you can see that's what I used. The rod is brass, the brush was brass but the twist holding the bristles was steel and I did mar up the inside of the intake tract a bit. It might just be visible in the pics. The valves themselves are hardened steel I believe, I know I used some metal picks to get some of the harder deposits off and the valves themselves didn't mark up at all. You want to be especially careful around the seating surface though. I hope that helps!
