Anything can be sold, as long as the price tag satisfies the dealer

Start off with a tow bill, the car has to be at the dealer to program the key. Then the cost of the key, plus the cost of programming........ could be a few hundred, $300.... $500....

I just looked around on google, a key runs around $100 (dealer will be more probably) and programming, if the dealer is straight should be $50ish, then the tow bill.

I was at dealership last week and overheard the service rep talking to someone on the phone -- 1 hr labor + the key -- it was something like $150

Yeah in the past you could bring them your vin and they could cut your key
Then you could reprogram it yourself, guess its not like that anymore

you can program a spare if you have one of the keys, but I don't think you could ever program a key by itself. that would probably make stealing a car a little too easy. If I'm not mistaken, you'd put the programed key in, do some kind of sequence of turning it on and off, take it out, and then put the unprogramed one in and it would copy the code from the other key to the blank.

but if they can't find a record for the mechanical key (mine came with a tag with a barcode on it) and he has to call a locksmith, well, I'd look harder for one of those keys.

Yes at one time you just needed the chip in the key but any original keys would not work. I was stuck in Kansas one time in a rental and a locksmith cut the key with the key code from the rental co. and I went through a series of turn the key turn the key off hold down the brake peddle for 10 minutes etc.

Too bad OnStar can't help with this...

I know my dealer will cut and program a key to the car (without the car being there) if I bring them the title and my photo ID showing that I own the car. The new keys all work off key codes to specific cars that your dealer can look up.
