Question about insurance

My dealer says my car should be coming in this week (just like last week), and he asked me to send him my insurance card with the Camaro listed on it. Should I really have this done before the car arrives? What if the car doesn't show up for another couple of weeks, won't I be paying insurance on a car I don't have yet?

Thanks in advance for some insight.

When I got my car, I just told Geico when I was getting it...
If you dont have it by the date you expect it by then just tell your insurance company to hold off.
All the dealer needs is proof that you have an insurance policy. They can call your insurance if they need verification. Who has insurance on a car they havent even signed for yet lol

They should not need that at all unless you are financing through them. You will get charged if you add it now.

I called my ins company the night before I picked it up. They informed me I could just get the car and I was covered for 30 days automatically under my old terms. That was a shock to me and I'm sure it's not that way for all companies... I added it anyway since I had them on the phone and I knew I would get the car in the morning.

Call your ins co and get the details from them... they can fax info directly to the dealer if they insist.

Also, I'm sure the rules are different for every state...

Just went through this, ordered GTI last Monday...it's not here yet,but they gave me the VIN and contacted my insurance company.I run to insurance pay downpayment and up to now...no car.

I get my first monthly insurance bill today for a car I am NOT in possession of yet.Went to insurance company today, they voided insurance and until I take ownership.Which the dealer tells me will be this friday for sure.Than I will contact insurance and my effective insurance date will be Friday.

The dealership cannot send to DMV the date of June 1 because that is now void.It will be when I have taken "ownership"....friday..maybe..

If anything happens to that car,you will be held responsible...if it is under your insurance...wait until you have the keys in one hand and the door handle in the other......it's too much of a headache..I learned a lesson but thank goodness it's been taken care of.....

Yep...you can usually have proof of insurance faxed to the dealer within an hr from the time you call and add the car to the policy.
I'm waiting til the day before I KNOW FOR SURE that I'm picking it up, and having the policy date effective at 12:00 AM that night.

Hi kids.... Im a licensed insurance agent in Pennsylvania (www.gallinaandsons.com)...

All you need is a CURRENT insurance card, reguardless of the vehicle listed. You then have 30 days to inform your current insurance carrier of the change. Yes, these rules may vary from state to state, but thats the status quo in most of the 50 states.

Call your agent, explain the situation, and they will usually be happy to make you an insurance binder. a BINDER is good for 30 days, so you can wheel and deal to make the dealer happy, and then inform your insurnace agent should you decide to purchase the vehicle...

Got it guys? happy driving!

Yup! Binders are your friend

On a side note, my insurance agent called today asking if mine was in yet. They know I'm getting one and can't wait to see one in person
