Automatic Trans?

I had this in the V6 LT engine and powertrain section with no replies so I thought I would switch to here.
I am sure that alot of you out there already know how to downgear by pressing the accelerator pedal in all the way or tapping it quickly. Well I was driving along today at low speeds and I just tapped the pedal to speed up a bit. Instead the car jerked into a lower gear, not a smooth shift by any means. I was wondering how this might affect the transmission if this type of thing happens more? I do not know much about transmissions but I do know that you should not down gear and put that much stress on the gears. So if anyone knows about these transmissions any info would be great. Just don't want to drop a tranny for no dang reason. Thanks.

Don't know how you define "tapped" but you evidently hit the accelerator hard enough to both jerk the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) along with dropping the manifold vacuum enough to have the car signal a downshift to accelerate. (You did say "speed up a bit") If you had kept your "foot in it" I am sure it would be fine. Contrary to popular belief, automatic transmissions last longer with fast, firm shifts than they do with slow, smooth shifts.
