Mustang drivers do, why don't Camaro drivers?
Ok, first things first, this thread isn't to piss anyone off,or offend anyone, and get me hate mail
,its just something that i have been wanting to know.Im sure most of you have seen my video from Laguna seca(thanks to C5 putting it on the homepage)and know im into roadracing,In the 5 or 6 track days i have attended,as well as my Silverstate race, there always seems to be 10-15 mustangs(except laguna there was only 3 and my 1 Camaro) and 2 or 3 Camaros, whats up with that? So since these are performance muscle cars that are built with speed in mind,i mean, you guys bought Camaros not a prius! From the LT to the ZL1 all these cars haulass,i used to have a 2011 1LT RS which i will post a couple videos at the end of this thread of this little V6 hanging and passing a V8 mustang,as well hitting the speed limiter,155 mph.I remember reading something here about someone not wanting to drive their car that hard, and in fact the 1st track day in my 1LT i said the same thing, but the fact of the matter is these cars can handle it,and it is so much fun. So i was thinking maybe some of you guys are intimidated by being on a race track, the fact is these aren't races, they are gentle, fun track days without risk of a 4x4 or ladder in your way.For most, your 1st time will be behind an instructor barely exceeding 90 mph(depending on the track)from there, there are different run groups that you can run in,there isn't ANY OPEN passing, except in the open passing class,so no risk of banging doors. You guys who run the 1/4 mile what is it like in your world, are there more mustangs then Camaros too? Next month is my Silverstate race in which my speed limit is 140 mph for 90 miles,to me thats pretty cool, and i just don't get why there are so few Camaros,on track and at these performance events, again the mustang guys do,and im pretty sure our cars are better then theirs. This 1st video is just a session from a track day at Fontana(Cal spdwy) in my 1LT RS the Last edited by cornerspeed92; 04-12-2013 at 03:09 PM. |

Not to change the subject right away, but I think that is the first video I've seen of the V6 hitting the limit...in other videos I've seen the driver never got over 146.
I've seen arguments from people saying the V6 could never hit 155. We knew they could and now its nice to see the proof. Looks like the car was in auto or sport mode. I'd think putting her in 4th or 5th and flooring it would be the way to do it best, but hell I don't know. Thanks for sharing....and I agree with you. Need more Camaros out there!!! EDIT:....OK you removed the video of the V6 doing 155....oh well at least I got to see it! lol

I think there are many reasons why this happens, and people do not want to "use" the cars for true cometition. First, many Camaro's and Mustang's are purchased because of the looks and styling of the cars. That explains why there are so many more V6 cars built than V8 cars. Second, there is a pretty big expense in going to the track. I was an avid drag racer for years, and as you know, it can really add up. You need a truck and a trailer. You will need tires and brakes sooner (if road racing, slicks for drag racing). You will need some safety equipment. The list goes on. Some folks just like building a car their way, and have no desire to compete. Many folks are bench racers! If it works for them, I am good with it!

The main reason: I simply have no interest in Racing/Tracking/Drifting or any other roadsport. I bought this car for it's styling and daily driving road performance. Even if I owned a C6 - I still wouldn't take it out to a track for open track days. Guess you would say I'm an armchair race car driver.

I know WAY more Camaro owners who run drags rather than road courses. Personally road racing simply does nothing for me. I have tried it but, not even close to the fun of a heads up all out drag race. Different strokes i guess. Or maybe the Mustangs prefer a venue they can win at

Why more Mustangs than Camaros on Track.....My thoughts after 15 years at the tracks in and around the Midwest.
Camaro Hiatus until 2010: Mustangs were still being built and raced 2010 Came back portly: It is a porker for the track, more wear and tear = more $ 2010+ Camaro understeer: Stock SS is not a pleasant track car at speed (ZL1/1LE fixed that) 2010+ Camaro cost: See #1, the Mustang has looked relatively the same since 05 (?) so they have had more time to depreciate and also be modified for track duty....If you purchased a 2010 Camaro SS you are most likely still making payments on in....IE: you don't want to track it if there is a chance insurance wont cover it -Matt

Your right cornerspeed , I think the problem is too many Camaro owners just like to see it parked in the garage and look at it for fear of it getting dirty . While i am not a Mustang fan at all I give them credit for doing with the car what it was meant to do .

I drage race mine, road race, SCCA time attack race, hell I'd try drifting if the tires weren't so expensive. To each their own I suppose. I know people with over a thousand HP that would never dream of any kind of racing, just spinning the rollers on the dyno is there gig. Nothing wrong with that, just not my bag.
