Question..Rev Limiter?

Hey Now,
I hope somebody else has had this happen and can give me an answer.
Today I was doing some spirited driving about town. I put it to the floor in second and it spun, and spun, so I backed off a little then put it back down.
Unfortunately, I was keeping my eye on the road, and not on the tach. It started to spin/grab,spin/grab, then it ..?popped out of gear?, The engine power was totally cut?. Either way, I just eased it in 4th, and proceeded on.
It seems to be running fine now, but I wonder if I over-revved it spinning and the power was cut? It seemed to have a 'chunk', just before it cut, as if it came out of gear.
I don't bang up against the rev limiter much, or at all. Is this what it does?

You most likely hit the rev limiter, it has happened to many of us. The car knows!
