The GM Cash for Clunkers program

Ok so I have a 1999 Explorer Sport that under the new MPG criteria gets a combined 15 mpg which means it qualifies for the Cash for Clunkers program. My question though is, the V6 Camaro qualifies me to get a $3500 rebate. The problem is though, when I do the qualifying check at Kelly Blue Book.com it says that the Camaro is eligible but when I go to GMs website for the Cash-Clunker program, it doesnt allow me to select a 2010 model yr thus I'm unable to select the Camaro. Does anyone know if the Camaro is eligible? Is it up to the car manufacturers in terms of which cars they will allow to qualify for this program or does the federal govt. have the last say and as long as it meets the requirements it will be eligible? I'm looking to get the V6 LS model which like I said comes in at 22 mpg combined under the new guidelines and qualifies. Anyone have any info they can provide? I know the program isnt supposed to take affect til July 23rd as details are still being worked out as I understand it. Any help anyone can provide is greatly appreciated, thanks!

You don't buy cars from GM you buy them from a dealership.

The money comes first from China as a debit, we have no cash we have to borrow any money right now. Then the Treasury is supposed to pay the dealer. The debit is then later paid back to China as bonds with interest.

i know i buy from a dealership but my question is, GM has a say in their incentives/rebates/etc does GM have leeway in terms of saying that the V6 automatic Camaro that gets a combined 22 mpg (which means its eligible for the CARS program) they wont honor it because its a new model car and is in relatively high demand? Or is GM obligated to allow it in the program? When I went to the GM Cash for Clunkers website to do my trade in/new car, the 2010 model yr wasnt selectable thus I couldnt select the Camaro which leads me to my question of how much leeway does GM have in saying that certains cars regardless of the 22 mpg they wont honor it.

thats true. im just curious why 2010 isnt selectable on the GM site for the program. I guess they just haven't updated it yet but since the Camaro has been out long before this program began I dont see why 2010 was left out. I guess I'll find out July 23rd when the program rolls out.

Good luck finding or taking delivery of an orderd car "before the money runs out" (per the CARS site as to how long it lasts...no kidding).

There is going to be a whole missing generation of cheap cars for first time and impoverished buyers when these CARS trades get sent to the crusher...

Anyhow, most people driving one cannot afford a new car anyhow. Good time to be a college grad with a POS car and a JOB tho I suppose.

Its not a GM program its a government program. Go to cars.gov that's the official site. Anything else is no good.

Its up to the dealer to apply to be a part of this program. Nothing to do with GM.

true but to my understanding of it is when the dealer sends in the request for the trade in and new car it will take about 10 days and if it goes thru they willl recieve the $3500 or $4500 directly. since financing isnt done when you pick up the car and done much sooner i would imagine that i can take advantage of this in the early stages... when you all ordered your car, when did you guys start doing the financing details? when you picked the car up? i would imagine itd be sooner so that way you have some idea of how much the payments will be when you finally do get the car.

CASH FOR CLUNKERS

THE GOVERMENT WEB SITE GIVES THE CAMARO V6 AUTOMATIC AT 22 MPG. THE MANUAL AT 21 MPG. SO THE AUTO QUALIFIES AND THE MANUAL DOES NOT. THANK GOD I GOT THE AUTOMATIC.

1 BILLION HAS BEEN APPROPRIATED FOR THE CLUNKERS. SUPPOSE TO LAST UNTIL NOV 1 09. POTENTIALLY ANOTHER 3 BILLION TO MAKE IT LAST 1 YEAR. BUT CONGRESS HAS TO APPROVE THE ADDITIONAL FUNDING.

I have a 2001 Explorer Sport 4x4 and looked up the NHTSA category: We're driving class 1 "trucks" and can have a minimum of 18MPG for CFC

It goes that if you're between 4-10 in improvement over the old vehicle, it's a 3.5K rebate. 10+ gets 4.5K in a rebate. You're looking at about 8 with the V6 (22 Combined) and 4 with the SS (19 combined). So we scoot in under the radar and get the 3500 rebate on both.

Bona-fide win, man.
