What does it take to be 10 Seconds?

Forgive me guys but im not a racer and im not educated in these matters so im sorry if this is a dumb question.

After watching Fast and Furious i was wondering.........what does it take for a car to be able to do a 10sec 1/4 mile?

The movies make 10 sec cars look almost common.........and yes i realize its just a movie.

so what would it take for a 2010 camaro to be 10 seconds? or a mustang?

He has a huge challenger in the movie that runs "9.6" i believe he said.

so what kind of specs do you need to run that good of a time? and how much money are we talking?

just curious

People have run mid 11's with a blower and some addons, I'd say about 12-15k worth of mods.

You get diminishing returns the faster you go.

I'd be willing to wager for around 15-20k of mods you could have a 10 second camaro.

It depends,

On a car with suspension designed for drag racing it's possible with less power.

I an a stock suspension Camaro that tips the scales at over 4000 pounds with the driver it takes a lot more. Look at one of the fastest NA Camaro on here from Texas. His car is 300 pounds lighter and is knocking on the 11 zone with no major mods.
My car has a bunch of mods and is in the 11's Their car runs 112 MPH and mine has to have the power to run 118 to get into the 11's

On a car I used to race several years ago we ran just in the nines with 650 at the crank at 3250 pounds. That was with slicks and a good suspension.

To get the Camaro to do that at 4000+ pounds will take 800+.

Gear availability and tire selection also limit what can be done.

We will prolly go to an automatic to help the launch. We still want to retain the stock rear axle.

We will be at the LSX Shootout in October at Memphis Motorsport Park.

We don't want to strip the car and ruin the looks, stock appearing is where it's at.

Robin

Robin

interesting.

so if you want a 10 second car out of stock its better to go with a stang cuz its lighter.

any challenger running 10 sec must be stripped down big time

Not really, their current engine combinations have to use a blower to make 500 horsepower. The LS series engine can make a lot of power before you need to add artificial atmosphere.

depends on the car you start out with, the new camaro/mustang/corvette I would think just bolt on parts.

But something like my 3rd gen that we are doing, lots of parts including a engine over haul & bored out.

Fixed it for you. I knew a guy who spent a good 60k modding his 97 Z28 and barely broke 12 seconds.... Worst part is he was fine with it!

It helps to be a mechanic first.

Second, lots of cash.

Third, do you want a street car running 10's or just a track car. Street cars running 10's are a very rare breed.

If I was to build a 10 sec street car I'd buy a Z06 with the LS7 and put a twin turbo kit on it and some drag radials and call it the day. (but thats 100k plus)

Much like the guys above mentions, a serious issue to consider is how 'multi-faceted' you want your car to be in terms of comfort and capability. If you want to run tens in a car that is a genuine corner carver running on street tires and pump gas, and which also makes for a livable daily driver, your quest is going to be a lot more interesting, and expensive, than building even a simple, livable driver with a more 'drag strip centric' suspension setup that can run 10's on full slicks and racing gas.

Join your local racing enthusiasts club and ask the people who've done it. Some of the people in my local club have managed to pull it off with backyard mechanic skills-but incredible investments of time gaining the knowledge to make it happen. It's not all just money because I've watched people throw thousands at a car to not make much progress.

Even a 1.5m Bugatti Veyron barely crests the 10 second zone and it has 16 cylinders 1000 hp. It will be very hard and expensive to get a non drag racing specific car that weighs as much as todays cars into the 10 second zone and still be streetable or even fun to drive.

1/4 mile times are not all there is to having fun in a car
